Stingers More Awesome Than Usual; Bobcats Draw First Blood In GPAC

MONTREAL — There’s bad news for the challengers in the Quebec Universities Athletic Association. The Concordia Stingers, who have captured the title every year since they entered the league, appear to be even stronger this year. The Stingers were wondering during the pre-season what they could possibly do for an encore this year. Improving on last year’s record-setting 22-1-1 season seemed unrealistic. However, they have picked up right where they left off last year having posted five straight victories over their Quebec opponents. Unbelievable as it may seem, the Stingers appear to be a stronger outfit than the 80-81 version. “We are definitely stronger behind the blueline and have more balance on the forward lines,” stated coach Paul Arsenault. PHILADELPHIA — Either the Flyers are going to play hockey three goals down or they are not going to play hockey at all. They’re trying to win the Stanley Cup from a bomb shelter. When Pat Quinn asks them to establish position, they don’t ask how high, but how deep. In nine of their last 10 games they have managed to fall behind by at least two goals after one period. In six of those nine, it has been a three-goal deficit or more. The bottom line, this early in the season, is not that they won only three of those 11 games. Instead it is how far a team playing this poorly appears to be from Stanley Cup contention. The pre-season feeling that the Flyers were a player or two away still…
