Ranger Defense Improves As Players Grasp System

NEW YORK — It sounded so simple when Herb Brooks explained it. But, of course, it was not so simple, which is why it took the New York Rangers almost two months — and the team’s most disastrous start in many seasons — to grasp the concepts that constitute coach Herb Brooks’“system.” But after the Rangers beat the Buffalo Sabres, 7-3 at Madison Square Garden for their most decisive victory of the season, it all began to make sense. “Lots of things are falling in a little bit better,” said Brooks, “especially our play without the puck. We’ve been trying to sell the guys on a motion game, on the basis of everything being generated from a good defensive base.” What that translated into that night was the Rangers’ third consecutive victory, following…

Kasper Shadowing Gretzky: Like Chess Masters At War

BOSTON — Wayne Gretzky and the Edmonton Oilers are getting a little tired of Steve Kasper. The other day, in Gretzky’s only appearance of the season in Boston Garden, Kasper once again applied the defensive screws to the Edmonton wunderkind, limiting him to one shot on goal although Gretzky did assist on both Oiler goals in their 5-2 loss to the Bruins. Gretzky’s apparent inability to play his normal game against Kasper obviously irritated Edmonton coach GM Glen Sather. “So many people keep talking about this guy Kasper that they’re making him out to be a genius,” snarled Sather after the game. “He’s an ordinary hockey player. There’s a thousand guys who can do the same kind of job. He just gets a lot more publicity here, I don’t think he did anything special.…

Perry’s Preachings Mean Nighthawk Benefits

NEW HAVEN — Since his return to the Nighthawks, coach Don Perry has stressed hard work and discipline and the results have been very encouraging. Perry’s way of doing things has resulted in a defense that is among the best of the American League teams in goals-against ratio while the club has yielded just eight third period goals in 12 games. The Nighthawks also boasted of not having a major penalty in two weeks time and also had the least amount of penalty minutes of any team in the league. The Nighthawks were off to a fine start before a road trip temporarily threw them on a downward slide. Perry’s crew fell in Rochester 6-3 before dumping Hershey 5-3 and the Nighthawks then lost games in Binghamton 3-2 and Adirondack 2-0 to…
