Until he suffered a separated shoulder earlier this season, the Minnesota North Stars’ Anders Hakansson was enjoying tremendous success in the National Hockey League, mainly because of his willingness to play a physical game. As Hakansson was waiting for his shoulder to heal so that he could get back into action, Robin Finn, who covers the Stars for the Minneapolis Star, caught up with the Swede and wrote this piece for THE HOCKEY NEWS, her first for us. Meeting Pleau’s Objectives Up To Developing Whalers

HARTFORD — The Larry Pleau Show, in the first full season of what the protagonist hopes will be a long-running hit, has played to mixed reviews. Pleau, the 34-year-old American entrusted with the rather formidable task of resurrecting the Hartford Whalers, has made enough deals, he says, and now will wait for a new crop of youngsters to develop. “When I took over, I had two things in mind,” Pleau said. “First, I wanted to get a goaltender, a guy who would speed up our progress. You can build a reasonably good team, but if the goaltending isn’t there, the improvement won’t show in the record. Secondly, I wanted to change the attitude. I want the teams in this league to realize that the Hartford Whalers are going to show up most…

Our man on the spot this week is Calgary Flames general manager Cliff Fletcher, who has already announced that he will stick with coach Al MacNeil — no matter what. When we last looked, the Flames — who made it to the Stanley Cup semifinals last spring — were mired in fourth place in the mighty Smythe Division, sporting a 3-11-4 record, which put them just above the Colorado Rockies in the standings. The Flames, of course, have been hard hit by the injury bug, with Paul Reinhart, Guy Chouinard, Kent Nilsson and Dan Labraaten the latest additions to the disabled list.
