BLUELINES
Goalie Mike Liut’s erratic play and temporary disappearance from the Blues’ lineup late in October raised questions about his future in St. Louis Liut’s guru, New York city lawyer Arthur Kaminsky, says Mike wants to remain in the Mound City. “Mike is playing out his option,” says Kaminsky, “but his missing a game has nothing to do with a contract dispute. He was aching from a shot he had taken in Boston.” Insiders report that Liut will remain with the Blues and Kaminsky supports the thinking … “We’ve made progress with Emile Francis,” says Kaminsky. “He’s a class guy. I remain optimistic that Mike will stay in St. Louis.” … Rangers, says the grapevine, have been talking to the Sabres about obtaining goalie Don Edwards. They’ve also supposedly been talking…

NHL Should Take Steps To Eradicate Fighting Dave Schultz built himself quite a reputation during the 70s as the pugilistic leader of the Broad Street Bullies, also known as the Philadelphia Flyers. Four times he led the National Hockey League in penalty minutes and when his NHL career finished during the 1979-80 season, he had amassed 2,294 penalty minutes, a total which stands as the most ever recorded in the NHL. However, few people realize that Dave Schultz also was a 20-goal scorer during his days in the NHL or that he was a kind man, slow to anger off the ice. Later this month,…

Millen Exceeds Whaler Expectations
HARTFORD — One reason that fans of the Whalers can see forever, even on a not-so-clear day, is goaltender Greg Millen. At 24 and a veteran of roughly 140 National Hockey League games, Millen still has much to prove, but he is beginning to look like the cornerstone that Larry Pleau and the Whalers hoped he would be. “Millen is better than we thought he was and we thought he was a good goaltender,” said Pleau, the Whalers’ GM-coach. “For a young goaltender, he is extremely disciplined. He refuses to fall to the ice. He always stands up. He just about forces the shooter to make the first move.” Millen arrived in Hartford in June as a free agent, formerly with Pittsburgh. The signing of Millen set off a testy arbitration case, which…
