Fergy Holding Lineup Spot If Savard Ends Retirement
WINNIPEG — Quoting even odds, general manager John Ferguson is bent on seeing his $2,500 gamble pay off. Prying Serge Savard out of Montreal is no easy task. He is, after all, a Canadien through and through. He is also comfortable, an enormously successful businessman, and retired. The Winnipeg Jets shouldn’t stand a chance of signing him. But stranger things have happened, insists Ferguson, and he won’t rest until he sees the big defenseman in his lineup. Plucked from the waiver draft, Savard said he would consider the invitation to play for the Jets. “He seems interested,” said Ferguson, returning from Montreal after a morning meeting with Savard, a day after the draft. Homesick Eriksson Leaves Flyers For Sweden
PHILADELPHIA — The Flyers, in no immediate need for Thomas Eriksson’s services, granted him a two-week leave last week to return to Stockholm. They only hope he comes back. “I had three different meetings with him,” said Flyers’ coach Pat Quinn. “Thomas is a shy, quiet kid and he said it was something he couldn’t really explain, but that he felt he needed some time to-go home and straighten his thoughts out. “I asked him a lot of questions. Is it the organization? Is it not playing? Is it me? Was it sending his friends Pelle Lindbergh to Maine?
