Soviet Win Won’t Change Canadian Philosophy
Although no one in the National Hockey League will deny—with a straight face, anyway—that the recent 8-1 rout of Team Canada by the Soviets in the Canada Cup was not embarrassing, don’t expect any major changes in the style, approach or philosophy Canadians currently use in teaching their system. Why? Because enough changes have already been made, thanks to earlier meetings between Canada and major European powers during the ‘70s. In a recent interview with the Toronto Star’s Frank Orr, Cliff Fletcher, the general manager of the Calgary Flames who held the same position with Team Canada, discussed the challenges and problems facing Canada when participating in one of these international tournaments. CAHA’s National Team Concept AS CANADIANS EVERYWHERE focused their attention on the performance of our NHL superstars in the second coming of the Canada Cup one question was raised: How successful will Canada be in future international competitions? The performance of Canadian teams internationally, particularly at the amateur level, is a concern to everyone. This is obviously a concern also to the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association, whose responsibility it is to develop players for tomorrow’s major events such as the Olympics and World Championships. With this concern now a priority, the CAHA, with the assistance of the Federal Government, has unveiled a new concept which is designed to better prepare Canada for future international hockey competition.
