Fred Shero Returns “THE BAND ELLWOOD, the band!” John Belushi’s revelation to Blues Brother Dan Aykroyd came to mind when Fred Shero returned to the Spectrum to promote a Flyers’ Oldtimers game. Like Belushi’s Joliet Jake film character, someone in the Flyers’ front office finally saw the light and realized it was proper hockey decorum to bring Shero back to coach the Flyers’ oldtimers prior to an exhibition game. Last season, the Flyers made a big production of naming their Team of the Decade. Invited back, by popular demand, were such Stanley cup gems as Bernie Parent, Ed Van Impe, Gary Dornhoefer and even Dave Schultz (second team). Curiously, however, the ballot neglected to include Coach of the Decade. Had such a category been present, only one name could have been entered—Fred Shero,…

Star Carpenter Sets Up Shop In Washington

LANDOVER—At last—at long last—the word is official. Bobby Carpenter, Jr., the highly-touted 18-year-old star from St. John’s Prep in Danvers, Mass, is indeed a Washington Capital. With a heavy air of speculation dangling for two months over his young head, Carpenter finally ended the suspense when the club called a Capital Centre news conference late last month to announce the signing of their No. 1 1981 draft choice. But the news conference more resembled that of a U.S. Presidential media event than a sports event, if one based such determination on the number of press in attendance. With representatives from Baltimore, Washington, New England and Canada on hand, Carpenter—the highest American ever chosen in the NHL draft—took the podium and said “I’m real proud to be a Capital. I didn’t think it…

Gilbert Jumps Back Into Tulsa GM’s Saddle

LOUISVILLE HOCKEY STICKS LOUISVILLE HOCKEY STICKS TULSA—Bobby Gilbert, sole owner of the Oilers for more than six seasons, was back in his old office at the Assembly Center. Bobby was named acting general manager of the hockey club, following the resignation of AI Rollins. “There are no hard feelings,” said Rollins, as he packed his bags to return to his home in Phoenix. “I had a difference of opinion with the new owners. 1 have very definite ideas on how to run a hockey club, I’ve been in this game a long time. If they don’t agree with me, there’s nothing for me to do but get out.” The former NHL All Star goalie for the Chicago Black Hawks and Toronto Maple Leafs said his plans for the immediate future were “indefinite”. He has…
