Disappointing End For Habs’Savard
MONTREAL—No one was shocked. Some people were sad. Serge Savard, who spent 14 full years with the Montreal Canadiens, officially retired from hockey last month. And while he officially announced his retirement during a mid-August news conference, Savard admitted he knew his National Hockey League career was over last April. The veteran defenseman was the last player to leave the ice after the Canadiens were eliminated in three straight games by the Edmonton Oilers in a preliminary Stanley Cup playoff round. He also intimated to teammates that he had played his last game with them. Changes in the equipment for hockey players have been among the most gradual in all of sport, professional or otherwise. Skates, a puck and a hockey stick have been hockey’s essential ingredients since the game’s origin and really haven’t changed that much until the past decade. It was during this recent period that other innovations concerning players’ equipment began to be accepted by the professionals. First, there was the growth of the popularity of the hockey helmet; prompted by the removal of the stigma associated with the helmet that it was for “timid” players and also by the proliferation of the helmet at the junior and minor levels of the sport. LOUISVILLE HOCKEY STICKS LOUISVILLE HOCKEY STICKS KITCHENER—Just exactly how important Orval Tessier was in the Kitchener Rangers’ quest for the Memorial Cup last season—they lost to the Cornwall Royals in the final—may come into focus this season. Tessier dropped a bomb on the Rangers by resigning from the team Friday. Aug. 21 to take over as coach of the New Brunswick Hawks of the American Hockey League. He replaces Doug Carpenter who moves on to Cincinnati. Many around the Ontario Hockey League felt last season, that without Tessier behind their bench, the Rangers would have been a last place team in their division.
