Let’s Make A Deal Allen’s Motto
PHILADELPHIA—In appropriate post-season pose, Keith Allen had a phone in his ear and his cogitating cap on his head. His team fell two rounds and roughly two players short of challenging for the Stanley Cup, so the Flyers’ general manager spent the final days of May lusting after the players, or draft choices who could make up the difference. “Cogitating,” was how Keith put it, when he was found one day at his Long Beach Island (N.J.) summer home. You think its easy to be a general manager? Keith is offering deals that no one in their right mind would refuse. Proven goalies, former All “Stars, Maine Mariners, old nets, used sticks, practice pucks…how could anyone resist? So far, they are. “It’s very frustrating,” said Allen. “I haven’t got a thing going.…

Winnipeg Workload Has No Letup
WINNIPEG—Many hockey buffs are of the opinion that when the curtain falls on a hockey season the entire cast, including the front office personnel, clean out their lockers and tidy up their desks and head home for an extended vacation. Perhaps the skaters drift away to off-season jobs, the green grass of home and golf courses, but the nonplaying members of the organization must begin the arduous task of preparing for the subsequent campaign. In the words of Ken Fenson, newly appointed vice-president of public relations: “It’s not the off-season for us, it’s full season. From season tickets to training camp, it’s the busiest time of the year. “We’re working on films, promotion programs for the rural areas, and then there’s the Jets’ baseball team.” The latter group is extremely popular as it travels…
