LOUISVILLE HOCKEY STICKS TORONTO—It was obvious by watching the Stanley Cup playoffs that there is an overall youth movement in the National Hockey League. Teams are no longer relying on age and experience to carry them in postseason play. Those who do (Montreal Canadiens, Boston Bruins) made early exits. Just one season after the International Year of the Child, there is a youth invasion. While the Guy Lafleurs, Wayne Cashmans and Serge Savards sit on the sidelines, it’s the Mark Messiers, Wayne Gretzkys and Dino Ciccarellis who are in the chase for Lord Stanley’s Cup. The influx of youth is the direct result of the NHL’s underage draft. Signing Up Free Agents Priority With Penguins
PITTSBURGH—As the Penguins head into this month’s National Hockey League Entry Draft without a first-round selection, coach Eddie Johnston says the team must sign some of their players who have become free agents. “We’ve got to get some of our players who have become free agents under contract,” said Johnston. Meanwhile, Johnston’s name is being mentioned less often concerning the vacant Montreal coaching position. Still, some reports have continued even though Johnston has another year remaining on his contract with the Penguins and was recently given a bigger hand in how the team is run by owner Edward J. DeBartolo Sr. Two Penguins who became free agents June 1 are goaltender Greg Millen and center Greg Malone. “Basically I can’t talk about the negotiations, but I like Pittsburgh,” said Millen. “We’ve got a great…
