HOCKEY TALK

Playoff Report Cards REPORT CARDS HAVE just been released following quarterly playoff exams in the National Hockey League. The envelopes, please… Montreal: The Canadiens’ total embarrassment brought back some memories. When Les Habitants were winning Stanley Cup after Stanley Cup a few seasons ago, several sages felt moved to dismiss the contributions of Scotty Bowman and Ken Dryden. Anybody could coach this team, and anybody could play goal for this team. Bowman and Dryden were merely the lucky people in the right place at the propitious time. Or so that silly logic went. Les Canadiens are now hitting golf balls after three straight losses to the Edmonton Oilers. And it wasn’t even close. Case dismissed. Grade: F. Calgary: There was a lot of pressure on the Flames this second season. When in Atlanta,…

Mike Liut: The Marvel Behind The Mask In St. Louis

While Wayne Gretzky was terrorizing goaltenders throughout the 1980-81 season, Mike Liut was frustrating shooters, playing in 61 of the St. Louis Blues’ 80 games, compiling a 33-14-13 won-lost-tied record and a 3.34 goals-against average And while Gretzky broke records in practically every scoring category imaginable, Liut broke no goaltending standards: He finished fourth in the games played category, behind Chicago’s Tony Esposito (66), Los Angeles’ Mario Lessard (64) and Pittsburgh’s Greg Millen (63.) And the 199 goals he allowed was one of the highest marks among goaltenders who appeared in 25 games or more. While only Lessard had more wins (35) this season than Liut, 13 of Mike’s peers had goals-against averages that were superior to Liut’s 3.34. But unlike Gretzky, Mike Liut is not receiving THE HOCKEY NEWS Player of the…

Islanders’ Sutter Tough Man To Keep Down

LONG ISLAND—Aching, itching, stirring alongside the Islanders’ bench in jacket and tie, all Duane Sutter could do was close his eyes and live the game in his own mind. Sometimes, he could not even do that. It is bad enough for a regular to be banished to the sidelines and it is always worse when the player is Sutter. He does not sit still under the best of circumstances, and having a shoulder wrapped in a bandage for two weeks is far from the best of circumstances. “I would sit there watching the game and my stomach would start to turn over.” Sutter said. “There was a knot in my stomach just like I was playing in a big game. Sometimes I felt sick.” When the Islanders faced their biggest test of the…
