Next to Tony Esposito, the 27-year-old center is Chicago’s most popular player and he was contemplating the Black Hawks’ January transformation from decidedly depressing to downright distinguished. The Hawks ended the month with a 9-3-1 record that included an eight-game winning streak. He was born in August, 1953. He was 26 when he became coach of the Washington Capitals in November, 1979, the youngest coach in the history of the National Hockey League. Now 27, he is still by far the youngest coach in the league in his second season behind the Caps’ bench. Half the players…

CAHA Asks Tourney Boycotters To Reconsider

In mid-December, two provincial hockey organizations, Ontario and Newfoundland, indicated to the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association their intent to boycott this year’s Air Canada national midget championship in protest over an alleged recruiting violation by last year’s champion, Notre Dame, from Athol Murray College, in Wilcox, Sask. The Saskatchewan school allegedly recruited players from all across Canada and violated residency rules with the purpose of winning the national title. CAHA president Murray Costello discussed his organization’s actions following the withdrawal of the two provinces and their plans for the tournament. The chairman of the board of the CAHA sent a letter to the two provincial organizations asking them to reconsider their stand and re-enter the Air Canada Tournament. The matter of the eligibility of the Saskatchewan school is still being pursued in…
