Back Surgery Brings Relief To Flyers’ Watson
PHILADELPHIA—The bad news is, Jimmy Watson is lost to the Flyers for the season. The good news is, Watson’s back surgery is thought to be successful, meaning the veteran defenseman may be back in the Flyers’ lineup next season. Watson. 28, underwent spinal-fusion surgery at Toronto’s Wellesley Hospital. Dr. Ian McNab, one of the world’s most respected back surgeons, found two discs that needed repair. Had more than two defective discs been discovered, Watson’s hockey career would have been prematurely ended. Following about 10 days of hospitalization, Watson is expected to wear a corset. “From what I understand,” said Flyers’ trainer Norm Mackie, “there won’t be any braces or cast.” “I’m glad it’s over,” said Watson. “I’ll be out the rest of the year, but I’ll be back next year.” Watson’s optimism is based on…

Smith Award Nominees Combining Hockey Talent, Academic Excellence
TORONTO—When David Branch took over as commissioner of the Ontario Major Junior Hockey League last year, he made changing the image of the hockey player - as a dumb jock—one of his primary goals. Branch felt that hockey players were a lot smarter than they were being given credit for. His suspicion was proved correct this year when six of the 12 nominees for the Bobby Smith Award (given annually to the player who combines high standards of play and excellence academically) were selected to play in the OMJHL All Star in Kingston in early February. The Smith Award was implemented last season, and the Oshawa Generals Steve Konroyd was the first winner. He received a $2,000 scholarship along with the trophy. This season the OMJHL has introduced a scholarship program providing tuition to…
Kings’ Triple Crown Line A Royal Combination
It was game 41 of the season for the Los Angeles Kings, January 7 at the Forum against the Hartford Whalers. Second period. Dave Taylor straddled the blue line at the lip of the Hartford one, fronting defenseman Norm Barnes. The Whaler attempted on pass the puck off the boards into the neutral zone, but Taylor interceded with a well-placed hip to knock the puck down in front to him. He stickhandled it ahead 10 feet to Charlie Simmer, who fielded flawlessly and began skating one-on-one against defenseman lickey Volcan. He suddenly pulled up sharply. To his left, just coming into view, was Marcel Dionne, Simmer passed quickly across the slot, Dionne fired off the pass, John Garrett was beaten, and the Kings had a goal. For Dionne, it was his 1,000th point in…
