ONTARIO MAJOR LEAGUE

OHL Player Of The Week The Ottawa 67s are on the move in the Ontario Hockey League’s Leyden Division race and so is their six-foot center, Doug Smith. The 170-pound Ottawa star has compiled an unbroken consecutive scoring streak of 32 straight games since coming back from an early-season knee injury that forced him to miss 16 games. Smith showed his offensive touch last week for the 67s as he scored seven goals and added six assists for 13 points in three games to win OHL Player of the Week honors. At his present pace of 35 goals, 35 assists and 70 points in 32 games, Smith is well on the way to establishing a personal junior high for himself. Last season he had only 23 goals, 34 assists and finished with 57 points…

The center was so widely used and popular that when it collapsed soon after completion, it took several days before…

All Vautour Asked Was NHL Chance

DENVER—It took 24-year-old Yvon Vautour a Rocky Mountain High to get untracked as a National Hockey League player. Vautour, an aggressive forward who can play both wings, followed Billy MacMillan to the Colorado Rockies from the New York Islanders—although their respective routes varied considerably. And Vautour is grateful for the opportunity. Vautour, who played in just 17 games for the Islanders last season after spending the three previous pro campaigns in the minors, has been a welcome addition to a Colorado team, which is not long on either size or toughness. Vautour, who was raised in Saint John, New Brunswick, has actually come through better than expected after being the Rockies’ choice (first overall also) in the NHL Waiver Draft, conducted Oct. 8. “He had been in the Islanders’ organization the last four or…

NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE

NHL Player Of The Week Charlie Simmer of the Los Angeles Kings didn’t make it in his bid to crack Maurice Richard’s 50-goals-in-50-games’ record but it didn’t stop the prolific left winger from piling up the scoring points. Simmer came up with a five-goal week and helped set up five others for a 10-point performance that won him the nod as THE HOCKEY NEWS’ NHL Player of the Week. The 26-year-old Kings’ winger missed Richard’s record, but only by an eyelash. He entered his 50th game against Boston needing four goals to tie the mark and ended up scoring three times for 49 goals in 50 games. His 10 scoring points gave him 87 for the season, three behind linemate Marcel Dionne, who also enjoyed a nine-point week, to lead the NHL. Simmer continues…
