Perreault Joins Sidelined Martin

BUFFALO—Gil Perreault and Rick Martin both missing from the Buffalo lineup at the same time, because of injuries? The Sabres have been hit by injuries this season as seldom before but when Perreault joined Martin on the sidelines after last Saturday’s game, it was an unprecedented blow to the offense. Perreault and Martin rank 1-2 on the Sabres’ all-time scoring list. Martin missed 20 games because of a sprained knee, then came back for one, then missed three more. He returned to action, rejoining Perreault as his left winger, and seemed to be going well, when the knee acted up again and he missed the game against Washington last Saturday. Two minutes after that game began, Perreault, who was coming off his most productive game of the season, also was out of action. The big…

Box Office Surge Pushing NHL To New Mark

TORONTO—The National Hockey League is reaching out for the pot of gold at the end of the attendance rainbow and if present trends continue, they should make it by season’s end. In the second of four quarterly attendance reports published and compiled by THE HOCKEY NEWS and covering the first 20 home games of the 21 teams, it is evident the NHL is on the right track towards eventually establishing a new box office high when the 1980-81 schedule terminates. The quarterly crowd report shows the NHL is already halfway there, with a reported attendance of 5,490,007 for the first 20 games—an increase of 84,399 over last year’s crowds at this time in the season. Enhanced by some hefty attendance increases in such NHL centers as Edmonton, Washington, St. Louis, Hartford and Minnesota,…

Leafs’ Crha Adapting To NHL Style

TORONTO—When Jiri Crha appeared in goal for all but 64 minutes of the Maple Leafs’ first 20 games, or 1,200 minutes of playing time, in the 1980-81 season, there was the worry that Crha would be burned out by the second half of the season. Or maybe shell-shocked the way the Leafs were playing. Actually the first quarter of the Leafs’ season was their best thus far as they compiled a 9-8-3 mark, largely on the strength of a 6-1 start and Crha handling practically all of the goaltending chores. Crha started the first 13 games in a row for the Leafs before Curt Ridley drew a starting assignment against the Winnipeg Jets. Then it was back to Crha for the next six games with the exception of a four-minute stint by…

Dallas Takes Showdown Series With Salt Lake

DALLAS—Home ice advantage wasn’t worth a penny when the two top teams in the Central League battled it out in three mid-January games. The Salt Lake Golden Eagles went into Dallas on Tuesday and handed the Black Hawks a 4-3 setback. But the Hawks came into the Salt Palace and won twice, 4-3 on Saturday and 4-1 the following Monday. Before heading for Salt Lake, Hawk goalie Glen Hanlon had shut out Tulsa, 8-0. By beating the Eagles twice in their own rink, Dallas moved into first place by two points, and squared the nine-game series between the two top contenders at 2-2-1. Hanlon, sent down from the Vancouver Canucks after a three-month layoff for knee surgery, worked his fourth game in the Monday victory, and headed back for the National League.…
