Ziegler Testifies At Hearing On Sport Violence

WASHINGTON, D.C.—To fight or not to fight, that is the question. National Hockey League president John Ziegler recently spent nearly two hours trying to give a satisfactory answer to members of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime during its second hearing on H R. 7903, “The Sports Violence Act of 1980.” Following Ziegler to the witness table were Pete Rozelle, commissioner of the National Football League; Simon Gour-dine, deputy commissioner of the National Basketball Association; Hank Peters, general manager of the Baltimore Orioles, representing baseball commissioner Bowie Kuhn, and Steve Brenner, general counsel of the North American Soccer League. All expressed varying distaste for and opposition to the proposed legislation, which would subject a player found guilty of using excessive violence and who “actually steps outside the role of athlete and sportsman” to…

Beavers Chop Delage In Move To Stay Afloat

LOUISVILLE HOCKEY STICKS LOUISVILLE HOCKEY STICKS SHERBROOKE—On Thursday, Nov. 13, Ghislain Delage, coach and cogeneral manager of the Sherbrooke Beavers, made an unsuccessful bid to purchase the team. Later that same day, he was fired. Talk about gratitude. It was one of the most bizarre and macabre scenarios ever to unfold in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. It started three days earlier when reports began circulating that the Beavers were in deep financial trouble. One rumor had the team shifting to Rimouski, about 90 miles northeast of Quebec City. Another had the franchise disbanding altogether. Georges Guilbault,’Beavers’ secretary-treasurer, co-general manager and one of the team’s six shareholders, ended speculation the following day when he stated: “The situation is not rosy. But as a director of the team I can state that we [the shareholders] have it in…

Robert Restless As Mending Rocky

DENVER—It hasn’t been unusual for Rene Robert to grow uncomfortable in different situations during his National Hockey League career. But the dilemma which confronted the 31-year-old Robert at the start of the current season was one to which he was totally unaccustomed. Robert was on the sidelines recovering from surgery to repair a calcium deposit which formed as a result of a groin-stomach muscle pull last season. Robert was hopeful of being back in the lineup by December. That was speculation on his part. No one knew for sure when the fiery Frenchman would return. But one thing was certain, he was growing restless. When last seen with the Rockies, Robert was making noises demanding to be traded if the team went ahead and fired coach Don (Grapes) Cherry last spring. Robert was…

HOCKEY TALK

A Responsible Citizen YOU NEVER KNOW who you’ll meet walking through O’Hare Airport in Chicago. But you’re always delighted when it’s a guy like Bobby Sheehan. The Colorado Rockies probably won’t win the Stanley Cup this year. But with Sheehan around, and hopefully he’ll stay around, they’ll enjoy the tedium that professional sports sometimes can be. Sheehan had to catch a plane this night, so, even if he wanted to, he couldn’t patrol one of his favorite haunts, Rush Street, the neon light capital of Chicago. “It’s my kind of town, Chicago is,” Sheehan chirps everytime he has a chance. “They’ve got a broad as mayor now, but she never would have made it if I was still around. The fans loved me. Trouble is, the Black Hawks didn’t. “I guess they thought 1 caroused…
