Black Hawks Tops In South Division
DALLAS-The “Red-Hot Hawks” were rolling along in first place in the CHL South, thanks to winning their first five starts. After a 4-1 decision in Fort Worth made it four straight on the road for Danny Belisle’s crew, they won their home opener against. the same turnpike rivals. 4-2. That gave Dallas a quick 3-0 advantage in the 18-game Turnpike Series. Steve (Stumpy) Hazlett had three of the Hawks’ eight goals for the week. In the game at Fort Worth, it was Hal Phillipoff and Hazlett scoring in the first period. Hazlett again in the second. NHL Player Of The Week
Mike Bossy of the Islanders lost his grip on the NHL goalscoring title last season but he is off and running in his bid to reclaim the league goal-scoring honors in 1980-81. The hard-shooting right winger turned in a productive six-goal week to raise his season totals to 15 goals and eight assists in 15 games for 23 points, just eight behind leader Charlie Simmer of Los Angeles and three in back of Marcel Dionne, also of the Kings. Bossy, who dropped from a career high of 69 goals two years ago to 51 last season, finished behind Simmer, Hartford’s Blaine Stoughton, and Buffalo’s Danny Gare for goalgetting honors in 1979-80. Now with 15 goals in 15 starts, Bossy appears to be ready to take over once more. Among Bossy’s six goals this…

Rookie Gaining Education On Hawks’ Defense
CHICAGO—Many underage juniors coasted through last season with swelled heads after being drafted by National Hockey League teams but not Doug Crossman. He led Ontario Hockey Association defensemen in scoring with 20 goals and 96 assists. Now, he’s trying to emulate two of the game’s top defensemen. Denis Potvin of the New’ York Islanders and his Chicago teammate Doug Wilson, in making the great leap from Ottawa of the OHA to the NHL. “I feel my last year in the juniors helped me a great deal,” said Crossman, a sixth-round 1979 draftee who has been playing bit parts for the Black Hawks since his recall from New Brunswick early in the season. “Now it’s going to take awhile tor me to get used to the styles of our forwards. I’ve found you can’t freewheel…

Blues’ Patey Gets Plenty Of Respect
ST. LOUIS—What a difference a year makes. This time last autumn, Larry Patey was the Blues’ answer to Rodney Dangerfield. Today he commands as much respect as anybody on the team. To Patey. the explanation is simple. “I’m playing more, for starters,” said the eighth-vear NHL center, who in point of continuous service is the Blues’ senior player. The grand old man of hockey? “Hey. it’s a little early for that,” the 27-year-old Patey said good-naturedly, but mindful of the fact that all too recently he was regarded as something akin’to a senior citizen and used sparingly. Although now solidly established as the center for Ralph Klassen and Mike Crombeen on the Blues’ checking line and a penalty-killer (usually with Crombeen), when last season began he was limited mainly to the latter role.…
