Rookies Show Bruins How To Win

BOSTON—The Boston Bruins’ nine-game winless streak finally ended with a 7-4 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins, and they have a little child to thank for getting them back on the winning track. Well, not really a little child, but certainly one of two 19-vear-old rookies who were playing junior hockey as recently as September and October of the current season. In the ninth game of the winless Ktreak. Steve Kasper, a centerman?’ho started the season with Sorel in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, had both goals in a 4-2 loss to the New York Islanders. And three nights later, against Pittsburgh, he scored two goals (his fourth and fifth of the season) to lead the B’s to victory. Against the Islanders. Barn-Pederson. another centerman fresh from Victoria in the Western Junior Hockey…

Blues’ Patey Gets Plenty Of Respect

ST. LOUIS—What a difference a year makes. This time last autumn, Larry Patey was the Blues’ answer to Rodney Dangerfield. Today he commands as much respect as anybody on the team. To Patey. the explanation is simple. “I’m playing more, for starters,” said the eighth-vear NHL center, who in point of continuous service is the Blues’ senior player. The grand old man of hockey? “Hey. it’s a little early for that,” the 27-year-old Patey said good-naturedly, but mindful of the fact that all too recently he was regarded as something akin’to a senior citizen and used sparingly. Although now solidly established as the center for Ralph Klassen and Mike Crombeen on the Blues’ checking line and a penalty-killer (usually with Crombeen), when last season began he was limited mainly to the latter role.…
