Talented Tulsa Lineup Gushes With Potential
LOUISVILLE HOCKEY STICKS LOUISVILLE HOCKEY STICKS TULSA—Four power play goals, two in the last two minutes of action, gave the Oilers a 4-3 upset victory over the parent Winnipeg Jets and a split of the two-game exhibition series. The victory came in Kenora, Ont., after the Jets had posted a 3-0 victory in Winnipeg Arena. Rick Bowness, Larry Hopkins, Jude Drouin and Bob Guindon supplied the Oiler scoring. The Jets scored two shorthanded goals. Five days later Jets’ general manager John Ferguson assigned 19 players to the Oilers, with the promise of a couple more later on. Pierre Hamel, a Montreal native who spent all of last season in Winnipeg, drew the Tulsa goaltending assignment. The 28-year-old Hamel is no stranger to Central League fans, having spent three seasons with Oklahoma City (1974-77) and one…

Flames Get Secure Feeling With Solid Defense Corps
CALGARY-Ask Cliff Fletcher what the problem with the Atlanta Flames was and he’ll answer in one word: Defense. In all the years the Flames were based in Atlanta, Fletcher, the club’s general manager, was never totally satisfied with the way the team prevented goals. And he does not point the finger at the club’s netminding. “We’ve always been highly critical of our defensive play,” admits Fletcher. “Until now. Now I feel we’ve reached the stage where we have a solid defense corps and there’s the possibility that a youngster like Paul Reinhart could move into the super-star category in the years ahead.” Over the last two years, the turnover on the Flames’ blueline has been complete. Gone are Pat Ribble, Greg Fox, Ed Kea, Miles Zaharko and David Shand. Brad Marsh, who joined…
Improved Talent In Binghamton May Sail Whalers Out Of Cellar
LOUISVILLE HOCKEY STICKS LOUISVILLE HOCKEY STICKS BINGHAMTON-The Whalers opened the season with an experienced club after Hartford dropped several veteran American league performers down to Binghamton just prior to the start of the NHL campaign. If these players live up to their expectations the Whalers have a chance to escaping the Southern Division cellar this year. Hartford sent goalies Ken Holland and Jay Palladino. Holland had a 3.70 goals-against average and a record of 15-13-5 last season with Springfield. Defensemen Chuck Luksa, Stuart Smith, Mark Renaud, Kevin Kemp and Marty Howe were also dispatched to Binghamton. Howe spent the latter part of the season with Hartford but was unable to make the parent club during training camp. Luksa had 10 goals and 39 assists to lead the Indians’ defense in.scoring during the 1979-80…
