Nilan Not Out Of Place With Habs
MONTREAL—Chris Nilan was explicit. “I don’t want to go back to Halifax,” the curly-haired right wing said in straightforward Boston-accented English. And when the Canadiens began their 1980-81 season. Chris Nilan was very much a part of their major league roster. What a difference a year made for the former criminal law student at Boston’s Northeastern University. When he walked into the camp a year ago, no one gave him much of a chance to ever play with the Voyageurs, let alone the Canadiens. BOSTON—Barry Pederson, C, underage draft, returned to Victoria of WHL for another year of junior hockey. BUFFALO—Robert Mongrain, C, and Rob McClanahan, RW, assigned to Rochester of AHL. Steve Patrick, RW, an underage draft, returned to Brandon of WHL for another year of junior hockey. Jim Jones, C, claimed on waivers from Toronto and later assigned to Rochester. Beaupre Surprise Minnesota Starter
BLOOMINGTON—For someone who did not know how long he was going to be with the Minnesota North Stars, rookie Don Beaupre sure brought along enough luggage. Beaupre, a 20-year-old goalie, could barely manage getting out of the Twin Cities airport. He had a trunk with his clothes, a carry-on bag and his equipment. “I came to Minnesota knowing I would get the opportunity to remain with the club,” Beaupre said. “If I proved I could play. I knew I would stick. But I really expected I’d be going back to junior.” So why so much baggage? “I spent two weeks in training camp with Sudbury,” said the native of Kingston.
