Martynuik Began On “Wrong Foot”
TORONTO—Names like Guy Lafleur, Steve Shutt and Bob Gainey have rolled off the tongue of former Montreal general manager Sam Pollock as the Canadiens’ first picks in the annual draft of junior players and all have gone on to have outstanding careers with the Bleu. Blanc et Rouge. But there have been others, too, like Cam Connor in 1974 and Robin Sadler in 1975, who were the top picks of the Canadiens, but never realized the expectations that had been set out for them. In 1970. the first year that the Canadiens were not given the privilege of choosing the top two French-Canadian players and were operating under the same drafting system as used in today’s entry draft, Montreal chose Ray Martynuik, a 5-8, 155-pound goaltender from Benito, Man., who played…
Memories Fade For Sabres’ Hopefuls
BUFFALO—It was a new experience for the Buffalo Sabres, training in Lake Placid and, for the first time, with Roger Neilson, a bug on conditioning, in charge. The surroundings and the work were not, however, new to two of the younger Sabres. Mike Ramsey and Rob McClanahan had trained and had enjoyed the biggest moment of their lives to date in the Olympic Arena at Placid, and they had practiced vigorously there under Olympic Coach Herb Brooks, who feels as the Sabres’ new head coach does about conditioning. Both players said that they reached an emotional high in winning the gold medal and feel that anything that happens in the future can’t be compared to that moment. “If I ever play on a team that wins the Stanley Cup, I know that will be…

To facilitate processing, type-written letters are given preference. Put European NHLers In All Star Format Now that the Canada Cup is postponed (probably for many years) why wouldn’t the NHL arrange an international game of its own. Instead of the All Star game between the two conferences, why not have a game between the European players in the NHL (Czechs, Finns, Swedes) and the rest of the NHL (Canada and U.S). Here I give you a team of Europeans who could be matched against the remainder of the NHL: Goal, Jiri Crha (Toronto) and Markus Mattsson (Winnipeg). Defense, Borje Salming…
Bruins Count On Goaltending Communication
BOSTON—The first thing Rogie Vachon did when he arrived in Boston after his July 23 trade to the Bruins was to look up his new coach, have dinner at his house, and talk over what they know the most about—goaltending. It was a rare experience. Few National Hockey league goalkeepers have ever had the opportunity to play for another goalkeeper as coach. In fact, in the whole 64-season history of the National Hockey League there have been only four goalie-coaches. Cheevers and Eddie Johnston of the Pittsburgh Penguins are coaching now. Emile Francis has directed the New York Rangers and now the St. Louis Blues for 11 years. Before that, you have to go all the way back to 1927-28 when Hughie Lehman coached the Chicago Black Hawks. Vachon, who has had a…
