HOCKEY TALK

Johnston Dismissal Reeked WERE IT NOT for the wonderful world of modern communications—newspapers, radio, TV—Eddie Johnston still might think he is coach of the Chicago Black Hawks. Not one member of the club’s front office had the courtesy—or is it nerve?—to inform him that he isn’t. No upset there, folks. The Black Hawks have all the class of a ham sandwich. Public relations to them is not a lost art only because they never had it in the beginning. Granted, it is the privilege of any club’s top brass to hire and fire as it wishes. But the manner in which Johnston was sacked on Friday The 13th of June—and in which Keith Magnuson was installed as the team’s fifth coach in five seasons—was as repugnant as it was predictable as it was…

“It Was All Very Embarrassing To Us”

On page 2 of this issue, HOCKEY NEWS columnist Bob Verdi gives one side of the story of the Chicago Black Hawks ‘decision not to rehire Eddie Johnston as coach for the 1980-81 season. Our final offer to Eddie Johnston was made…

The other came as a surprise—and somewhat of a shock. On the agenda was discussion about the Milwaukee “incident”. That was planned. Also on the agenda was the Grand Rapids situation. That was an 11th-hour addition. Milwaukee focused national attention on the league during post-season playoffs when owner Lloyd Pettit withdrew his team from a first-round series with Saginaw, charging the Gears with “brutal and vicious” play. Milwaukee wanted the series forfeited to them but commissioner Jack Riley forfeited the series to Saginaw. The Gears subsequently bowed out of competition against Fort Wayne in five games. The IHL board of governors was upset with Milwaukee’s actions at the time and…
