Hawks Get Early Start On Spring; Victoria Dominates WHL All Stars
LOUISVILLE HOCKEY STICKS LOUISVILLE HOCKEY STICKS MEDICINE HAT—Over the course of the Western Hockey League’s 72-game regular season, the Portland Winter Hawks and Regina Pats established themselves as the best clubs in the Western and Eastern divisions, respectively. Both clubs learned in a hurry that what you did yesterday is not important. It’s what you accomplish today that counts. And, suddenly, the Winter Hawks are on the outside looking in, while the Pats are hanging on for dear life. The demise of the Winter Hawks came about in the three-team Western division double home-and-home 12-game round robin semifinal series. If you understand what that means, read on. After 11 games, the Victoria Cougars had a record of five wins and two losses, the Seattle Breakers were 3-4 and Portland was 3-5. And the final game had…

Top NHL, Amateur Coaches To Conduct Clinics
THE HOCKEY NEWS, in conjunction with the CAN/AM Hockey Group of Guelph, Ont., is sponsoring six advanced level coaches clinics, which will be conducted during the month of June on three separate weekends. This is the second year that CAN/AM and THE HOCKEY NEWS have sponsored the clinics; last year there were only three and the response to them was so overwhelming that the format has been doubled for 1980. The dates and locations of the clinics, especially tailored for coaches of college, junior college, high school, advanced amateur and 14-16-year-old travel teams, are as follows: • June 6-8: Buffalo, N.Y.: The clinic will be conducted at the Holiday Twin Rinks and will feature Washington Capitals’ coach Gary Green, at 26 the youngest coach in National Hockey League history and the man…

Bowman Bopped As Sabres Advance
BUFFALO—The Buffalo Sabres already have advanced further in Stanley Cup play than they did last year. Now they are at the step where they stumbled in 1976, 1977 and 1978 and became known as playoff patsies—the quarterfinals. The Sabres, who finished second in the National Hockey League standing, eliminated the Vancouver Canucks, who finished 15th, in four games. Buffalo won the first two at home, lost the next on the road, then won a tough one in Vancouver, 3-1, with the last goal going into an empty net in the final minute of play. Rick Martin scored four goals in the four games. Gil Perreault was the leading scorer of the four-game series with five points and scored the goal that clinched the series. Bob Sauve yielded just one goal in the…
