Old Faces Still Captivate Fans In All Star Picks
LOUISVILLE HOCKEY STICKS LOUISVILLE HOCKEY STICKS TORONTO—This was expected to be the year of the ‘kid’ in the National Hockey League but you couldn’t convince readers of THE HOCKEY NEWS to think that way. Selecting the NHL All Star teams in the 33rd annual HOCKEY NEWS poll, the reading public seemed to favor the old faces rather than the new ones in naming their favorites for the 1979-80 season. Such established hockey names as Tony Esposito, Larry Robinson, Marcel Dionne, Borje Salming, Guy Lafleur and Steve Shutt were still fresh in the minds of the selectors, who still weren’t convinced the new breed—Wayne Gretzky, Mike Bossy, Don Edwards, Raymond Bourque and Barry Beck—were ready to take over yet. • THE BUFFALO SABRES and Montreal Canadiens are getting the nod as this year’s Stanley Cup finalists by many astute puck followers…The NHL clubs with the best records since the All Star break were Montreal with 45 points, Buffalo with 38, Boston, 36; Islanders, 36; Washington, 33; and Philadelphia, 33…Washington fans were saddened at their team’s failure to make the playoffs. It appeared that this would be the year the Caps finally made it. Too bad the Caps didn’t qualify. If they had, U.S. President Jimmy Carter was invited to their first game. Hartford suffered a tough break when Blaine Stoughton fractured his ankle in the Whalers’ first playoff game against the Canadiens. Stoughton, who tied with Buffalo’s Danny Gare and Los Angeles’ Charlie Simmer as the league’s leading goal…

BURLINGTON—Unlike the University of North Dakota, neither Vermont nor Wisconsin qualified for the NCAA hockey championships in Providence, R.I. spoils this year. But that didn’t keep the Catamounts and Badgers from rubbing shoulders with the Sioux when the 1980 All-America team was picked. All three teams shared equal honors as the selectors named two Vermont players—defenseman Lou Cote and center Craig Homola—to the Eastern squad while Wisconsin and North Dakota put two each on the Western team. Chosen from the Sioux were defenseman Howard Walker and center Mark Taylor. Wisconsin contributed goaltender Roy Schultz, who signed a pro contract with the Boston Bruins last week, and rearguard Theran Welsh. Selected by the American College Coaches Association for Titan hockey sticks and THE HOCKEY NEWS, the Eastern panel of coaches had little trouble naming…
