HOCKEY TALK
Strength From Weakness QUITE SIMPLY, Bill Heindl couldn’t cope. He was in the prime of life, or should have been, but a spate of personal misfortunes got the best of him, and on a September afternoon of last year, Bill Heindl attempted the unthinkable. He attempted suicide. “I went by my mother’s house around noon, and left a note,” he recalls. “She was working then, and I just wanted to let her know what I was doing. Then, just as I had planned, I went to a bridge near town, just outside Winnipeg. “I don’t recall the details leading up to it exactly, because, who knows what goes through the human mind at a time like that. But I do know I jumped. I do know that I felt there was nothing left, that…
Bowman’s Touch Sharpens Perreault
BUFFALO—When Scotty Bowman took over as coach of the Buffalo Sabres, he stated one of his aims was to help Gil Perreault, whom be considered one of the two best players in the National Hockey League. There will be some protests—especially from Edmonton and Los Angeles—but the Buffalo Sabres’ fancy-skating center will be ranked by many at the top with Montreal’s Guy Lafleur. What’s more, he now definitely is a complete hockey player. Anyone who questioned Gil’s defensive ability in past seasons couldn’t do so this year. He forechecked and backchecked, as did all the Sabre forwards since Bowman took over. There were plenty of other outstanding performers with the…
IHL’s Format Extended Playoff Race To Wire
LOUISVILLE HOCKEY STICKS LOUISVILLE HOCKEY STICKS WINDSOR—The International Hockey League’s Board of Governors are patting their collective backs for establishing a new playoff formula for the 1979-80 season. And with good reason. As the 35-year-old league embarked on its final week of the season, all 10 teams were still alive and the eight playoff partners may not be determined until the last day of the 80-game season. Under the existing plan, a team’s divisional finish guarantees a playoff berth just through the first three positions. The final two slots will be determined by points regardless of division. Also, the eight starting positions hinge on total points, with divisional finish having no bearing. As the final week began, just six points separated the top four clubs and only three divided the final four. In the…
