Contract With Jets Makes Christian’s Day
WINNIPEG—The scene was strictly Smalltown U.S.A. Banners and signs were in every storefront window, the Stars ‘n Stripes fluttered in the February breeze, close friends and relatives gathered in the local hockey rink to welcome their hero home, the mayor was there with the key to the city…and John Ferguson was there with a contract. Yes, Dave Christian Day was a happening in Warroad, Minn., and the town may never be the same. “It was really something,” said Christian. “I think they closed down the whole town and there were about 1,200 people in the rink.” Christian, of course, was a member of the United States Olympic hockey team which won the gold medal at Lake Placid and, following stops at the White House and Minneapolis, he finally made his way home from the…
HOCKEY AD LIB
An Unusual Youngster WHEN GLEN HANLON reported to the Vancouver Canucks, general manager Jake Milford sent him to get a rental car so he could get around until he was settled down. MADISON—If there was any question about the Western Collegiate Hockey Association being the best amateur league in the United States, that doubt was removed by a gutty band of collegians plucked mainly from WCHA rosters in the Winter Olympics at Lake Placid, N.Y. When the United States won the gold medal in hockey by shocking the world by beating Russia 4-3. then topping Finland 4-2, it was the WCHA that furnished the bulk of the players as well as the coach for the Cinderella story. Of the 20 players on the Olympic roster, no less than 13 came from the WCHA. The group was molded into one by Herb Brooks, who took Minnesota to the NCAA championship last season after his Gophers had finished second to North Dakota in the regular season. Brooks…
