LOUISVILLE HOCKEY STICKS LOUISVILLE HOCKEY STICKS NEW WESTMINSTER—The 197980 Western Hockey League season has been a dismal one for the once-powerful New Westminster Bruins. “But, despite the fact the Bruins have just four wins and a tie from 54 games, there still are some smiles in the New Westminster camp. “We are attacking the rest of the season very optimistically,” offered Bruins’ assistant coach Tracy Pratt, a veteran of 18 years in professional hockey who joined the club early in 1980. “Management isn’t quitting and neither are the kids. We just need a few breaks…We need to win two or three in a row.” The Bruins, who not too long ago appeared in four consecutive Memorial Cup tournaments, won’t be making any post-season appearances this time around. Executive of the Year Ken McKenzie, the President of THE HOCKEY NEWS, was on hand in Pittsburgh recently to present Pittsburgh Penguins’ general manager Baz Bastien with The Hockey News’ 1979 Executive of the Year Award. Ken gave the award to Baz (above) at Pittsburgh’s 44th annual Dapper Dan dinner, which was attended by over 2,500 people, including master of ceremonies Bob Prince (seated next to the podium) and, seated next to Prince, Pittsburgh Steelers’ owner Art Rooney. Above, right, Ken chatted with former NHL player Stan Gilbertson, whose career ended tragically several years ago when he lost a leg in a car accident.
