Last season, the Royals played their best hockey by far during their playoff series with Verdun. And now, as the teams approach the final lap of the QMJHL race, the Royals are hot. Boiling hot! The Royals have put together a 10-game unbeaten streak (nine wins and a tie), and as a just reward, they find themselves one point out of first place. SPRINGFIELD—A little more than halfway through the current season, Maine Mariners were leading the box office derby. The transplanted Syracuse Firebirds were struggling, but the newcomers to the AHL in Adirondack were having a banner year in attracting fans to the Glens Falls Civic Center. Overtime With New Twist
Mickey Slowik is a New York City hockey product who starred for years with the Manhattan Arrows of the Metropolitan Hockey League. He later became one of the foremost referees in the Eastern Hockey League. Now a successful businessman on Long Island, Slowik is an office official at all NHL games played at Nassau Coliseum, and he has some unique views on the subject of overtime, which he recently revealed to freelance writer Mike Barnes. I am tickled that the National Hockey League general managers are considering the resumption of overtime play starting next season. However, I do hope they will consider some innovative changes rather than the traditional 10-minute sudden death format.
