NHL Player Of The Week

DANNY GARE…Buffalo Sabres The Buffalo Sabres continue their pursuit of the point leading Philadelphia Flyers in the NHL’s overall race and the Sabres are getting some big offense while doing the job. Team captain Danny Gare had another prolific week for the Sabres as he scored four goals, three of them in one game as Buffalo lowered the boom on Pittsburgh 9-0. When the Sabres went down to defeat at the hands of St. Louis 3-2, Gare scored his 36th of the year. Bill Barber is the Philadelphia Flyers’ candidate for Unsung Player of the Year. Now, you may object vehemently, arguing that Barber has been recognized—once as a first-team NHL All Star, last season as the second-team All Star left wing. He has played for Team Canada and Team NHL and he has scored 50 goals in one season. Next season he will pass the prestigious 300 career-goal-mark. What more, you may ask, does a guy want? In Bill Barber’s case, he wants nothing more. He sincerely seems happy to play the game, dress quickly and go home. Celebrity status isn’t Barber’s big aim in life. “I like it this way, I really do,”…
