HOCKEY PEOPLE

It was a heart-warming moment during the 32nd NHL All Star center, chairman of the All Star game dinner, was joined by Bob Montague, left and Red Foster, to accept a check for $75,000 in aid of the Special Olympics for handicapped children this summer. Looking on at rear left is Bruce Norns, owner of the Detroit Red Wings. NHL has been solidly behind the kids’ summer program for many years. Roger Doucet of Montreal beams out the Canadian national anthem during the All Star pre-game ceremonies at center ice. While Roger thrilled the record 21,002 crowd with his Canadian version, Roger Whittaker, left, followed with a magnificent rendition of the American anthem. Reed Larson, star defenseman of the Detroit Red Wings, poses happily with his father who came from Minnesota to…

Scrappy Smyl Bright Spot For Canuck Future

VANCOUVER—From the depths of despair which has been the camp of the Vancouver Canucks during the past five weeks comes a ray of hope for the future. His name is Stan Smyl. Throughout the drought which has seen Canucks drop from first place in the Smythe Division by as much as seven points at one time to where they now trail the Hawks by almost 20, Smyl has been the one man who has been a leader and kept his production high. In fact, it was on the team’s celebration of their first victory in 11 games that Smyl had two of his personal streaks broken, as he approached club records on both accounts. He had gone nine consecutive games with at least one point, which, when compared to the marks of Guy…

Sutter Determined To Make Blues Successful

Brian Sutter presents an interesting study in contrasts. “I don’t have a bucketload of talent,” the St. Louis Blues’ captain says humbly, adding in the next breath, ‘‘If I tell myself I can knock somebody off the puck, I can.” Sutter’s actions are as dissimilar as his words. Off the ice, the rosy-cheeked 23-year-old is as good-natured and likeable as the proverbial boy-next-door. During games, the square-jawed little forward seems always to be either (a) involved in a scoring play, (b) trading punches with a taller, heavier opponent or (c) seething in the penalty box. Will the real Brian Sutter please stand up? As it happens, all the aforementioned represent valid component parts of Sutter, who led all National Hockey League left wingers in goals last season with 41 and has been a central…
