Rockies’ Togetherness Suiting McEwen Fine

DENVER—Mike McEwen winced at the mere suggestion. The suggestion was, now that he’s been in the Mile High City playing for Colorado for more than two full months, to compare what he’s doing here with what he was doing in New York with the Rangers. McEwen, who led the Rockies in scoring from the time of his arrival in the Barry Beck trade through mid-January, just shook his head. “Are we still talking about New York?” the 23-year-old shrugged. “I don’t want to talk about New York anymore.” So McEwen proceeded to talk about his play with the Rockies, play which has been very, very good. “Grapes (Don Cherry) is using me a lot,” McEwen began. “On the power play. It’s still basically the same. It’s hockey.” Was McEwen surprised at his point production the first…

Riggin Hot After Rejoining Flames

ATLANTA—Drenched in sweat and surrounded by reporters, Pat Riggin smiled and had the look of satisfaction on his face. The 20-year-old goalie had just won his first National Hockey. League game and in the process, tasted his first shutout as the Atlanta Flames beat the Winnipeg Jets, 2-0. It was a gratifying victory for the Kincardine, Ont., native who only a month before had been sent down to the minors and been replaced as backup goalie by Reggie Lemelin. While in Birmingham, Riggin played in 12 games and had an 8-22 record, which warranted his return to Atlanta. “I’ve got the guys in Birmingham to thank for getting me back here,” Riggin said. “They played great in front of me and got my confidence back.” Since his shutout over the Jets, Riggin has posted more…

Unsettled Season Leaves Knights Wondering

LOUISVILLE HOCKEY STICKS LOUISVILLE HOCKEY STICKS LONDON—The Knights are wondering what happened. It seems like a long year from last year to this for the London squad. No doubt they were itching to start the 1979-80 campaign. Last year they came close to winning their division and having a crack at Peterborough Petes for a Memorial Cup berth. They just missed, but there was always this year. They had a lot of returning players and were picked by many as the class of the league. Now, they are second last in the Emms division, one point back of Brantford Alexanders, three points behind Niagara Falls and seven behind Toronto Marlbo-ros and Windsor Spitfires, who are tied for top spot. The worse part of it is that they are three games below .500. “We got off to a…
