HOCKEY VIEWPOINT
Leafs’ Hockey Funny WHAT THE HELL is going on in Toronto with that hockey club? For anyone even remotely associated with Toronto Maple Leafs, that question is the one he’s heard most often in this 1979-80 season. What’s going on with the Leafs? Trying to explain it in less than 100,000 words is the same as trying to write an assessment of Iranian politics on the back of a streetcar transfer. Mostly, hockey with the Leafs is fun. It’s ha-ha funny. It’s unusual funny. It’s weird, strange, crazy, nutsy or any other word you’d care to apply. At times, it seems that Toronto didn’t need to spend money to build a new zoo. All-American Eaves Making North Stars’ Power Play Hum
BLOOMINGTON—“Let’s call it the Mike Eaves-University of Wisconsin power-play.” That was the answer of Minnesota assistant coach Murray Oliver when he was asked how the North Stars should describe one of the NHL’s most-successful man-advantage formations. The North Stars have scored 23 of their 43 power-play goals since Eaves arrived. He has accounted for five of them personally and has played a role in many more. Eaves made Oklahoma City’s power play the Central League’s finest when he won CHL rookie of the year honors last season. “So When he came up to us this season, it was only natural for us to discuss the system with him,”…

Orr Supports Boycott LAKE PLACID—President Jimmy Carter’s proposal that the United States boycott the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow has the support of hockey super star Bobby Orr. The former NHL defenseman, now assistant to NHL president John Ziegler, has come out in support of a Western boycott of the games. Orr said he would also be in favor of cancellation of a further competition between the Soviet Union and NHL teams. Orr said he sympathizes with amateur athletes who have trained hard for the Summer Games. “I was hurt a lot last year, and I practised a lot by myself—not with the team (Chicago Black Hawks). It was the toughest thing I’ve ever had to do.” Still, Orr said it was important to side with the Canadian and U.S. governments against Soviet Union intervention…
