Riggin Hot After Rejoining Flames
ATLANTA—Drenched in sweat and surrounded by reporters, Pat Riggin smiled and had the look of satisfaction on his face. The 20-year-old goalie had just won his first National Hockey. League game and in the process, tasted his first shutout as the Atlanta Flames beat the Winnipeg Jets, 2-0. It was a gratifying victory for the Kincardine, Ont., native who only a month before had been sent down to the minors and been replaced as backup goalie by Reggie Lemelin. While in Birmingham, Riggin played in 12 games and had an 8-22 record, which warranted his return to Atlanta. “I’ve got the guys in Birmingham to thank for getting me back here,” Riggin said. “They played great in front of me and got my confidence back.” Since his shutout over the Jets, Riggin has posted more…

GUY LAFLEUR…Montreal Canadiens After a temporary mid-season slump, the Montreal Canadiens appear to be well on the road back. One player who hasn’t lost a step in the Montreal plunge is Guy Lafleur, their super star right winger, who continues his pursuit of NHL scoring leader Marcel Dionne. Lafleur enjoyed another big week in the NHL as he scored five goals and added four assists running his season totals to 85, just six in back of Dionne, who was only able to contribute a solitary goal for his week’s work. The Canadiens won their three starts this past week with Lafleur scoring in all three games. He now has 36 for the season leaving him one behind Dionne and putting him into a tie with injured Charlie Simmer for second place. The scoring…
