Valiquette Follows Cherry’s Lead
DENVER—To skate or not to skate. To play or not to play. Such was the apparent problem facing center Jack Valiquette of the Colorado Rockies early in the current National Hockey League season. But even at that, Valiquette was not playing, or skating, as people expected. Remember this was the young man whose size and style once drew comparisons to Phil Esposito. “We joke about it that we changed his skates and it changed him as a player. But we insisted that he change skates. And I tell you,…

Canuck Player Parade Marches On
VANCOUVER—Vancouver Canucks’ general manager Jake Milford has swung into a wheeling and dealing act of late, making some changes on the roster. Challenge Cup Most Exciting Event Of 1979
TORONTO—It was a year like no other year in the modern history of hockey. Everything happened it seemed in 1979. It was the year when the Soviets came to town and embarrassed the NHL. It was the year the NHL decided it had enough of the long, costly cold war with the rival WHA and merged. It was the year Scotty Bowman and Don Cherry surprisingly changed jobs. It was the year of the introduction of the helmet rule for all new NHLers. It was the year in which a goaler was credited with the first NHL goal scored by a netminder. And it was the year when the heat forced three coaching changes in the NHL in the first 10 weeks. Here’s a capsule look back at 1979 and all its…
