Bobcats Prove Unbeatable On European Exchange Tour
BRANDON—With the avalanche of international hockey competition on all levels now in process, the University of Brandon Bobcats represented the Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic Union on a six-game European tour. With the help of “International Sports Exchange”, the Bobcats were able to arrange a six-game tour of Austria and Germany. Unlike some junior teams who recently were defeated badly in tournament play, the Bobcats completed their trip very successfully by compiling a record of six wins and no losses. The Bobcats faced a variety of competition, ranging from the Junior Select team in Austria to a first division club in Germany. “We were able to adjust to the ice size and the different style of play better than I could have imagined,” explained head coach Andy Murray. In their first two games…
The Hockey News
The International Hockey Weekly Founded in 1947 Published by W.C.C. Publishing Ltd. 214 King St. West, Suite 314, Toronto, Ont. M5H 1K4 New Names At Top AN INCONSISTENT FIRST half of play by most teams (Flyers being the spectacular exceptions) has shuffled the overall standings in the National Hockey League, lifting some clubs upwards and dumping other clubs downwards. In a season in which the league seems to have moved a step nearer to talent parity, 14 of 17 non-expansion clubs were in different positions after the first half of the ‘79-’80 season, than they were after the first half of the ‘78-’79 season. Only three clubs held the same positions as a year ago—Vancouver 13th, Detroit 15th and Colorado 16th. Moving up in the first half were Fyers, Sabres, North Stars, Kings, Penguins. Moving down were…
Texans Vacate Cellar With Spurt; Eagles Winging Way Towards First
LOUISVILLE HOCKEY STICKS LOUISVILLE HOCKEY STICKS FORTH WORTH—After spending most of the season in the cellar, Ron Ullyot’s Texans climbed into seventh place by putting together three games without a loss. The stretch didn’t start that well, as the Texans took a 4-1 shellacking in Tulsa. But Michel Plasse’s brilliant goaltending provided a 2-1 victory when the two clubs played in Fort Worth the next night. Tied with Oklahoma City for the next-to-last spot in the CHL standings, the Texans went into OC and had to settle for a 3-3 draw. But the next night at home they edged the archrival Dallas Black Hawks, 5-4, while Oke City was losing to Tulsa. “It’s a great feeling to have somebody to look back at,” said Texans’ president Cliff Overcash, referring to the two-point edge over…
Refereeing Complaints Not Formal
Several newspapers have carried complaints from New York Rangers’ general manager Fred Shero and assistant GM Mickey Keating that National Hockey League referees are not calling obvious hooking, holding, slashing and interference penalties used by opponents to hinder, maim and intimidate Swedish forwards Anders Hedberg and Ulf Nilsson. Scotty Morrison, the NHL’s referee-in-chief had the following views when asked if either NHL president John Ziegler or vice-president Brian O’Neill had asked him to take any action in the situation. No, I haven’t been asked to act. I don’t know if Fred Shero said those things because I didn’t hear him, although it’s been widely reported that he has made those complaints. I will say that number one, I haven’t had any films brought before, me pointing out where the Swedish players have been…
