Words Don’t Win Championships

For the past two seasons, the New York Islanders have been the best “on paper” team in the National Hockey League, so much so that if Stanley Cup championships were decided by writers’ opinions and players’ predictions, the Isles would have won by a landslide in both 1978 and 1979. But the Stanley Cup is awarded to the team that proves itself superior on the ice— and that is a place where the Islanders have flopped in recent years. In the 1978 quarterfinals, they fell victim in seven games to a more aggressive and hungry Toronto Maple Leafs team. And in the 1979 semis, the squad one overly excited journalist once called “the best damn team in professional hockey” was overwhelmed—psychologically and physically—by an inspired New York Ranger team. After two years…

Maritime Races More Competitive With New Division Alignment

(THIS IS THE FIRST OF A THREE-PART SERIES PREVIEWING THE TEAMS IN THE FIVE CANADIAN INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETIC UNION CONFERENCES.) HALIFAX—This year’s Atlantic Universities Athletic Association Conference once again appears to be the most competitive in Canada. With the new alignment of two divisions being used, it is hoped that this will create a greater rivalry in the divisional play. The general consensus is that the weaker teams have strengthened themselves and that the stronger may not be as strong as last year. All this leads to what is hoped will be a very exciting year in the Maritimes. ACADIAN: This year’s Axemen will have 13 returning lettermen which, hopefully, will be an excellent base on which to build for this season. Coach Don Wells looks to last year’s MVP John Saunders to carry…

Gradin Stunned By Rocky’s Knockout Punch

VANCOUVER—Thomas Gradin was shaken, in more ways than one. Not only did the rocket punch which floored him have him shaking his noggin but the rules which govern such an altercation also had him wondering. And it wasn’t the fact he is from another country that he couldn’t figure it out. Things are pretty dumb over here sometimes. Gradin, who treats everybody the same over here, whether they are Barry Beck or not, gave the Colorado defender a clean check at 10 seconds of the second period and Beck retaliated with a vicious slash. Hyped up on Don Cherry’s mean pills, Beck proceeded to chase the 165-pound center and punched him, knocking him down with the one blow. When linesman Swede Knox grabbed him, Beck waltzed around, then disposed of the official with ease…
