Hawks, Eagles Head To Head In New Lineup
LOUISVILLE HOCKEY STICKS LOUISVILLE HOCKEY STICKS DALLAS—Perhaps it will be with a little touch of irony that the two winningest teams in Central Hockey League history begin the 79-80 season as the defending Emory Jones and Adams Cup champions. Following a successful 78-79 season in which the Salt Lake City Golden Eagles set a new CHL mark in winning 47 regular seasons on route to the Emory Jones Trophy, the Eagles have become the all time winningest club in he CHL with a.564 lifetime winning percentage. In their five Central Hockey League seasons the Golden Eagles have compiled a 200-151-63 record to earn the top position in the CHL all-time standings. Meanwhile the Dallas Black Hawks who finished the 78-79 season with 26 victories in their final 29 games, including eight of nine…
Ranger Recruit Sulliman Looking Very Impressive
NEW YORK—If pre-season performances mean anything at all (They do! They do!), then it looks like the Rangers have found the perfect left wing for right wing Anders Hedberg and center Ulf Nilsson. His name is Doug Sulliman, and he’s a five-foot-nine, 195-pound 20-year-old from Glace Bay, N.S., who was the Rangers’ No. 1 draft choice this past August. All during the Rangers’ training camp at Richmond, Va., observers were raving about Sulliman’s style, which very closely resembles that of his once and future teammate, Don Maloney. Last year Maloney, who played with Sulliman at Kitchener, came up to the Rangers right after the All-Star break, made a glittering debut against the Boston Bruins and starred for the Rangers for the remainder of the regular season and throughout the playoffs. From…
Cooper Shows Off Starwars’ Look
WINNIPEG—The Luke Skywalker look is coming to professional hockey. Winnipeg Jets of the National Hockey League put an experimental set of hockey equipment by Cooper Canada through its first test run at their rookie camp in Ste. Agathe, Que., and the general consensus after the week-long session was that the Cooperall is only a year, or two, away from regular use in the NHL. “We want to be the first team to use the new Cooper equipment,” said John Ferguson, general manager of the Jets. “And I’d like to be using it next season.” The Cooperall is 40 per cent lighter and 20 per cent more protective than conventional equipment and, in effect, eliminates the regular hockey pants and stockings. The main feature is an inner girdle which covers from the top of…
Presence Of Howe Helps Whaler Kids
HARTFORD—Ageless veteran Gordie Howe may be forced to hang up his skates for good this time. At fifty-one years of age he’ reported to training camp in good shape. After a summer of tennis, running, sailing, swimming, and water skiing he remarked, “I’m feeling pretty good.” But dizzy spells that apparently, have bothered him. on and off over the last four seasons may finally dictate his retirement from the game. Whalers’ physician, Dr. Vincent Turco, said: “I’m con-cerned. The dizziness may be related to an old fractured skull injury. I’ll have to check it out before I give him the okay…” Turco did indicate that, except for the dizziness, Howe was in excellent condition. “He’s a rock of Gibraltar,” he said. In the meantime Gordie skated with the team as it opened…
