S. and Canada DALLAS— How many teams will operate in the Central League for the 1979-80 season? That question was still up in the air, although league president Bud Poile and the Board of Governors were hoping for an early-summer answer. One fact appeared certain. With the Detroit Red Wings abandoning Kansas City (in favor of an American League farm at Glen Falls, N.Y.), the CHL would go into its 17th season never having had exactly the same membership from one year to the next. A group of KC businessmen were attempting to save the CHL operation…

Wallaceburg, Ontario Sold in U.S and Canada GRAND RAPIDS— Moe Bartoli had it figured out pretty well. After his record-breaking Grand Rapids Owls had eliminated the spunky Milwaukee Admirals in the quarterfinals of the International Hockey League’s Turner Cup playoffs, he established a fool-proof plan to bring the Owls home first. “All we have to do is win eight more home games—and nobody can beat us.” In winning the IHL Huber Trophy, emblematic of the overall league championship with a record-setting 109 points, the Owls used home ice to almost perfect advantage. Over the 40-game home schedule, the Owls lost but…
Cherry Pondering 4 Coaching Offers
BOSTON— One of the NHL’s most colorful hockey coaches is job hunting and he says he’ll take his time and ponder all offers. In all there are four teams seeking the services of Don Cherry for next season and while it appears the Toronto Maple Leafs seem to have the inside track, Cherry is also entertaining overtures from Buffalo, Atlanta and Colorado. Cherry and the Boston Bruins, the team he led to the brink of the Stanley Cup this season, parted company after the playoffs. Cherry was reportedly demanding $100,000, a raise of $40,000 from his Bruins’ contract. Boston GM Harry Sinden, who has been feuding with Cherry this season and throughout the playoffs, said Cherry was closer to $90,000 with bonuses. The Bruins gave Cherry his release to allow him to negotiate a…
Young Rangers’ Miracles Ran Out, But Season Labeled Huge Success
MONTREAL— The Miracle on 34th Street is over. The New York Rangers’ bid to win their first Stanley Cup since 1940 ended in Montreal on May 21, when Les Canadiens vanquished the Rangers, 4-1, winning their fourth consecutive game from the New York upstarts, their fourth consecutive Stanley Cup, and the 22nd in their illustrious history. The victory capped a four-game burst which saw the Canadiens, after losing the first game, 4-1, outscore the Rangers 18 to seven and put on an incredible display of backchecking, forechecking and sheer skating finesse which in the end left the Rangers dazed and confused. “They came out flying early,” said Fred Shero after the last game was over. “1 don’t think I’ve ever seen a team that fast in my life—not even the Russians.” For Shero, a longtime…
