Few Surprises In Molson Cup Race

MONTREAL— Familiar patterns held forth across Canada when it came time for the winners of the Molson Cup competition in the cities of Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver. Guy Lafleur—to no one’s surprise—won in Monteal for the fifth consecutive year; Borje Salming captured honors in Toronto, marking the sixth successive year that either he or Darryl Sittler has won in that city and in Vancouver, rookie Glen Hanlon, who was sidelined for the latter portion of the regular season, kept the silverware in the goaltending fraternity as has been the custom on the west coast. Lafleur, hailed as the National Hockey League’s best player, pulled away from the field early by winning four of the five season segments. Each segment was worth $1,000 to the winner with a similar amount donated to a charity…

Stopping Canadians’ Lafleur Difficult Task

MONTREAL— During the National Hockey League’s Stanley Cup playoffs one entire nation—Canada—and a number of hard-core centers of fans throughout several areas of the United States, get what they have been waiting 680 regular season games to see, an unmitigated assault of North American hockey at its best. Isles Respond In Time To Salvage Home Series

LONG ISLAND— Denis Potvin’s somewhat lucky sudden-death goal kept the New York Islanders alive in their Stanley Cup quarter-final series with their crosstown rivals, the New York Rangers, when his shot deflected off Ranger Carol Vadnais past goaltender John Davidson. What the National Hockey League’s Challenge Cup Series had been unable to do in February—attract large quantities of influential New York media types—the Long Island Railroad series between the Isles and Broadway Blueshirts may have accomplished. Fan and media interest was at the highest level in the history of hockey in New York with the pressure increasing all the time. “Most of that pressure is on us,” admitted Potvin. “We have to win or our season is a failure. The Rangers are happy to be here and their season already is a success. “We…
