Hamilton’s Play Making Penguins Take Second Look
PITTSBURGH— The Pittsburgh Penguins made left wing Jim Hamilton their top amateur draft selection in the National Hockey League’s 1977 lottery. They took him in the second round from London of the Ontario Hockey Assocation where he scored 39 goals and added 53 assists in 65 games his last year of junior hockey. Last season, Hamilton spent most of the year in the minors, but appeared in 25 games for the Penguins and had two goals and four assists in mostly spot duty. This year, however, Hamilton was cut early in training camp. “I was disappointed when I was cut that I wasn’t getting that good a shot at camp,” said the 22-year-old native of Barrie, Ont. “After only three exhibition games I got sent down. Cheevers Has Been Trouble For Canadiens In Past Stanley Cup Action
BOSTON— Gerry Cheevers plays his best hockey at playoff time. The veteran Boston goaler has been especially hard on the Montreal Canadiens over the the years. Cheevers is the only netminder to blank the Canadiens in a Stanley Cup game since 1971 and he is also the first since Johnny Bower to shut out the reigning cup champs twice since 1969.
