Outspoken Flyer Clarke Feels Merger Good Deal For Players And Owners
PHILADELPHIA— Need an opinion on a hockey-related subject? Bobby Clarke is your man. Don’t get the idea Clarke stands at his locker in the Philadelphia Flyers’ dressing room and shouts, “Hey, today I want to talk about merger.” That’s not the man’s style. After years as one of his sport’s most prominent players, Clarke prefers to blend into the Flyers’ scene. But ask the Flyers’ respected captain a question and you’ll receive a thoughtful opinion. “I always try to answer questions honestly, and that gets you in trouble,” Clarke said. The most important subject in hockey now is the National Hockey League’s “expansion” into Quebec City, Winnipeg, Edmonton and New England. Outside league offices and courtrooms, this most significant development since the NHL’s original expansion is known as merger. And what does Clarke, who…

Lack Of Offense Worries Neilson
TORONTO— The heady binge, inspired by the bizarre firing (for two days) and rehiring of coach Roger Neilson, a five-game unbeaten streak, is only a distant memory for the Toronto Maple Leafs now. That burst, which locked up a spot in the Stanley Cup playoffs for the Leafs, was followed by the Leafs’ reverting to the ordinary play which has been the dominant feature of their work for much of the *78-79 National Hockey League. They won only once and tied one in seven games and if the Minnesota North Stars had been able to generate a hot streak, the Leafs would have been in danger of missing the Stanley Cup tournament. Of course, the team’s detractors are hesitant to write off the Leafs totally. In the 1977-78 season, the Leafs were dreadful…
