The Student Coach… AT 35, BOB BERRY is the youngest coach in the National Hockey League. He also is one of the most promising. “He is the best coach for his age I’ve ever seen,” said Marcel Dionne, who is not easy to please. He also is the ninth coach the Kings have had in their 12 seasons so far. Owner Jack Kent Cooke also is not easy to please. Berry does not have a lot of experience as a I coach or a lot of talent to coach. The team is not going good and his job is in jeopardy. There is no security in coaching, anyway. It is the most degraded of professions. The Old Grey Fox is dead, wounded by overpaid players and shot down by I demanding management. Coaches…

Esposito Maintains Role As NHL’s Leading Active Goal Scorer

MONTREAL— Phil Esposito of the New York Rangers isn’t scoring goals with the same proficiency as he did back in the early 1970’s, but the veteran center remains the active leading goal scorer among National Hockey League players. Guy Lafleur is closing in on the top rung with 331 goals. Two other members of the Montreal Canadiens are prominent in the all-time scoring race. Jacques Lemaire is in the No. 6 spot with…

LETTER OF THE WEEK

Absolute Outrage Not Starting Trottier As an avid hockey enthusiast and supporter of international competition, I was naturally delighted by the decision to replace the annual All Star contest with a Soviet All Star-NHL All Star series. I feel, however, that it is necessary to revise the process by which the starting NHL team is chosen. It would be an absolute outrage for Bryan Trottier not to reveive the honor of being the starting center for this squad. Any spectator who has seen Trottier perform knows what I am talking about. For those who have not, his statistics speak for themselves. He has been one of the prime reasons for the Islanders surge into the upper echelon of hockey teams with the Canadians and Bruins. If Bryan Trottier does not receive the starting…
