Ftorek, Gretzky Making Impact

CINCINNATI — Two of the World Hockey Association’s young stars of the future—Robbie Ftorek of Cincinnati and Edmonton’s Wayne Gretzky—are riding high in the league’s scoring race. Ftorek, the talented Stinger center, is the current WHA point scoring leader despite the fact his team is eight points off the league pace. The diminutive Cincinnati star had 64 scoring points after 42 games to lead Real Cloutier of the Quebec Nordiques by one. Robbie’s 47 assists are a league high. The Cincinnati pivot scored once and set up two others as the Stingers tripped up Birmingham 4-3 in a weekend-closing game. While Ftorek continued to push towards the scoring pinnacle in the WHA, another young favorite was making waves in the West. Isles’ Trottier Nearing 2-Point Game Average

MONTREAL— Center Bryan Trottier of New York Islanders is flirting with a points-per-game average of two, a level never attained in any National Hockey League season. Trottier, who missed four games earlier this season because of a shoulder injury, has 73 points in the 38 games he has played for an average of 1.92 points-per-game. The highest average ever recorded in one season among players with 50 points or more was 1.97 by former Boston Bruin great Bill Cowley. He had 71 points during the 36 games he played in 1943-44. The only other player to post a mark better than 1.78 is Phil Esposito of New York Rangers. While with Boston, Esposito had a 1.95 average during 1970-71 when he set the NHL record of 152 points in 78 games and…
