Mohawks, Freedoms Hot In Pursuit As Cherry Hill Holds NEHL Lead

MANCHESTER— Northeastern Hockey League owners were very pleased with the competitive balance shown through the first five weeks of the circuit’s maiden season. When this issue went to press, just five points separated the first place Cherry Hill Aces (19 points) from be fourth place New Hampshire Freedoms and Utica Mohawks (14 points). Play opened with the Freedoms getting off to a fast start and holding the number one spot for three weeks before the Aces caught fire and passed the New Hampshire crew thanks to a six-game win streak, best in the league this season. Utica had a modest win streak, but lately the Erie Blades have been the team to beat as they won six and tied one in their last nine games to take a firm hold on second…

Kings, Caps Keep NHL’s Attendance Below Last Season

MONTREAL— The National Hockey League is running slightly behind last season at the box office but if it weren’t for two teams—the Los Angeles Kings and Washington Caps—the league would actually be showing a plus in attendance. According to figures compiled by THE HOCKEY NEWS for the first 10 home games of each of the 17 NHL teams, the league operated with an attendance deficit of 33,569. For a corresponding number of games in 1977-78, the league attracted 2,177,666 fans. This season the figures are 2,144,097. Both the Kings and Caps are well behind last season’s box office figures which account for the NHL’s minus rating. Los Angeles has drawn 39,666 less fans to its games in the L.A. Forum this year and the Caps have a minus 32,311. Crowd figures are unofficial, of…

Hawks Guaranteed To Frustrate

CHICAGO— Why? Why do the Black Hawks have twice as many victories, at the quarter point in their season, over the Montreal Canadiens than they do over the entire rest of the enfeebled Smythe Division? Why do the Black Hawks have more wins against learns with .500 or better records than teams with less than .500 records? Why do the Black Hawks go on a six-game road trip and win only twice—in a building where they haven’t won in five years and later in a building where they haven’t won in four years? Why do they get beaten 8-3 by a Colorado team which almost never wins and then romp over a Montreal team that almost never loses by the same score? Why do they play 20 minutes against the Vancouver Canucks and 60 minutes against…

Whalers Discover Formula To Topple Jets

SPRINGFIELD— Almost a year had passed since the New England Whalers had been able to chalk up a victory over the Winnipeg Jets. In their last 14 meetings the Whalers were 0-12-2, which includes a humbling four-game sweep by the Jets in the finals of last year’s Avco Trophy playoffs. In their first two meetings this season the Whalers had managed a tie in Winnipeg, but suffered another defeat at the hands of the Jets a week later in New England. So the Whalers had plenty of motivation for the third meeting with the visiting Jets—and they wasted little time in jumping to a 30 lead. The final score was 5-2 and the Whalers hoped their win would set the stage for a complete reversal of past performances. Coach Bill Dineen credited improved…
