Unbeaten Brandon Threatens Record As Runaway Wheaties Hit 22 Games
LOUISVILLE HOCKEY STICKS Made in Canada by HILLERICH & BRADSBY. LTD Arnold Street. Wallaceburg, Ontario Sold in U S. and Canada BRANDON— Much has happened in the first one-third of the Western Hockey League season. Coaches have been replaced. Winning streaks have come and gone. Some players have skated from obscurity to prominence. And there have been about the usual number of fights and suspensions. But one thing hasn’t happened yet: Brandon Wheat Kings haven’t suffered a defeat. Through 22 games of the 72-game regular schedule, coach Dune McCallum’s Wheal Kings have kept that “zero” under the loss column. They’ve won 20 and tied two. And they’re threatening to rewrite the WHL record book, from front to back. Opposition coaches usually refrain from flying into rages when they’ve tried and failed to beat the Wheaties. Write to: FAN FORUM, The Hockey News, 1434 St. Catherine St., W., Montreal, Canada H3G 1R7 Hockey Interest Extends To Deep South You might be interested to know that even way down south and 700 miles from the nearest team, there is still some interest in hockey and the ramification of the McCourt case. I wish there was more interest—such as a team here—but in lieu of that, THE HOCKEY NEWS proves an adequate substitute. Without it I’d feel even more removed from the sport. WILLIAM J. SCHATZ, Miami, Fla. Financial Structure Hangs In Balance The whole financial structure of all hockey teams hangs in the balance, while the Dale McCourt case drags on. No wonder the league and players association are prepared to take it to the highest court. From the beginning the…
Bruins’ Big Games Bring Out Cheevers’ Best
BOSTON— “What can you say about the guy that hasn’t been said before,” said Atlanta coach Fred Creighton. “In the first period alone we should have had at least four goals and in the second period he stopped three shots in three seconds, all of them without a stick.” “He was the only reason we, won the game,” said Wayne Cashman. “But it’s only what you expect. We’ve been watching him do it for years. You just know what’s going to happen.” “That’s the sign of a good goaltender,” said Bruins’ coach Don Cherry. “He holds you in there until you come and then you come along and you forget about all the saves he made. He held us in there and we came alive. That’s the sign of a good goaltender. “I’d say he’s…
Minnesota Rolls Back Into Lead As Gophers’ Sweep Ousts Irish
GRAND FORKS— The big bombers were out in force in the sixth week of WCHA play. The 10 league teams combined for 108 goals in 10 games. The big outburst came at Minnesota, where the Gophers blitzed Michigan 8-2 and 10-5 to take over first place from Notre Dame. The only winning team to score five goals or less on the sixth weekend was Wisconsin, which dropped Michigan State 5-1 to salvage a series split. DENVER AT NORTH DAKOTA: North Dakota’s defense, the best in the league, got a stern test from defending league champion Denver. Junior center Rick Zaparniuk scored twice as the Sioux beat Denver 7-3 the first night. Wingers Erwin Martens, Cary Eades and Mark Taylor all blasted two goals as the Sioux outlasted Denver 8-5 the second night. Denver scored…
