MacKinnon Jets’ Star Of Future

The Winnipeg Jets have treated the amateur hockey draft somewhat coolly in recent years. They preferred to go with the experienced players but things appear to have changed with the WHA team. This season they picked off several promising youngsters in a bidding war with the NHL and one of these acquisitions in whom they have a lot of hope for the future is defenseman Paul MacKinnon. The 20-year-old Brantford, Ont., native was believed headed for the Washington Caps in the NHL after they drafted him. But MacKinnon opted for the WHA Jets instead after a brilliant final junior year with Peterborough Petes and now the Winnipeg team feels it has uncovered a future star in the six-foot, 190-pound defenseman. Many NHL scouts feel Lowe will go in either the first or second round of the 1979 draft. “I discussed it with my family,” Lowe explains. “We figured that I needed one more year…

DENVER— The NHL underwent its third coaching change of the 1978-79 season when the Colorado Rockies dismissed Pat Kelly and brought Aldo Guidolin—not Bep Guidolin as some news services reported—onto the coaching scene as his replacement. Guidolin, who is 46, accepted the role as Rockies’ coach for the rest of the season. He steps up from his post as chief scout to assume the head coaching job. GM Ray Miron said Guidolin was the logical choice because no one else knew the players as well as he does.” “He’s coaching because we asked him to,” said Miron. “He knows the team is in trouble. If he wants to go back to scouting at the end of the year, he can have his job back,” added Miron. The Rockies’ GM says it has been a…
