Orr Did The Right Thing Hanging Up His Skates
Everyone hated to see Bobby Orr leave the game of hockey. Let’s face it. We may not see another player of his quality perform for some time. They say the great ones only show up every 20 years. Realistically, Orr did the only sane thing when he informed the Chicago Black Hawks in a dramatic and passionate farewell, that he wasn’t in shape to play. The old legs couldn’t do the things they used to any longer and he wanted out. Six knee operations had drained Orr’s mobility on the ice and he was the first to admit that he felt he was taking money under false pretenses. In a voice quivering at times. Orr fought back the tears as he announced his retirement from the Black Hawks. It was a difficult…
Rangers Taste Their Own Medicine
NEW YORK— After winning eight of their first 13 games by virtue of some outstanding goaltending by John Davidson and Wayne Thomas, the Rangers dropped two of their next three contests. And in each instance, the primary reason for the loss was because the opposing goalie was giving the Rangers a taste of their own medicine. First, the Minnesota North Stars’ Gilles Meloche ended the Rangers’ seven-game winning streak when he “stood on his head” and turned aside practically everything the Rangers threw at him, leading the Stars to an upset victory. “We played well enough to win that game,” said Ranger assistant coach Mike Nykoluk after it was over, “but we ran into a hot goalie. What can you say it happens.” A few nights later, it “happened” to the Pittsburgh Penguins, when…
Speedy Ruskowski Valuable Addition To Jets
WINNIPEG— Nineteen-hundred-and-seventy-four was a very good year for Terry Ruskowski of the Western Canada Hockey League, Swift Current Broncos. Not unlike other skaters of his graduating class in June of that year, the five-foot-nine center was well aware that a 20-year old must impress the talent scouts at that most crucial stage of his career, or the odds on turning pro are markedly reduced. ~ Ruskowski enjoyed the kind of super season that could transform any cynic into an optimist. He rounded out his junior playing career by firing 40 goals and setting the table for 93 additional counters. Other present World Hockey Association stalwarts also shared the spotlight in ‘74: two Edmonton Oilers — Ron Chipperfield and Dennis Sobchuk finished one-two in the WCHL scoring race with logs of 90-72-162 and 68-78146 respectively.…
