Even now, hockey fans in Eastern Canada associate the best of the Western International Hockey League with the Kootenay club. Since their last league title in 1960 however, the Trail squad has steadily slipped further away from a contending status, finishing a dismal fourth in 1977’78. Before the start of the current season, the only significant change in the Smoke Eater team was a coaching change which saw a member of that World Champion Trail roster, Harold Jones, returning to the Silver City to take up bench pacing…

Flyers Ready To Welcome Leach’s Old Scoring Form

PHILADELPHIA— Reggie Leach shot, the red goal lamp behind Don Edwards began spinning and the Spectrum crowd rose in roaring tribute. As Leach turned, he was confronted with his Philadelphia teammates streaming off the bench. Congratulations were in order, from Flyers and fans, because for the second consecutive game Reggie Leach resembled the player who terrified National Hockey League goaltenders by scoring 80 goals one season. Leach’s goal in Philadelphia’s 3-3 tie with Buffalo was only his second of the young season. What encouraged the Flyers, however, was Leach’s skating and shots-on-goal totals; nine vs. Buffalo, seven the night before in Atlanta. A week before Reggie’s revival, he was confined to press-box observation duty. When trades were mentioned, Leach’s name was usually included. Observers suspected that Keith Allen frequently said to other NHL general…
