Bruin Injuries Force DeMarco To Put Off Long Awaited Moose Hunt
BOSTON— Ab DeMarco is a much travelled hockey player. He’s had stops in both the NHL and WHA and now the call had gone out to him to come to the rescue of the Boston Bruins, who became riddled with injuries. DeMarco, a nine-year NHL veteran, failed to make it with the Bruins at training camp and went home to Northern Ontario to hunt moose, something he’s wanted to do in the fall for years. His phone rang and it was Harry Sinden, the GM of the Bruins. The club had lost Brad Park, Mike Milbury and Dick Redmond, to injuries. Could he help out? DeMarco agreed and left his moose hunting behind and headed for Boston. “It’ll have to wait,” he told friends. DeMarco said the Bruins gave him the same deal as training…
Kindrachuk To Captain Penguins
PITTSBURGH— The Pittsburgh Penguins may have fooled some of their fans and some other people around the National Hockey League when they elected Orest Kindrachuk team captain. Kindrachuk, 28, came to the Penguins during the off-season from the Philadelphia Flyers along with defenseman Tom Bladon and left wing Ross Lonsberry. In exchange Pittsburgh surrendered their number one draft choice in last June’s amateur draft. “Being elected captain by your teammates is quite an honor,” Kindrachuk said. “I just hope I can contribute and help this hockey team.” Many people expected Peter Mahovlich to be elected to the captaincy. Pete captured the fancy of many Civic Arena fans last season after being obtained from the Stanley Cup champion Montreal Canadiens. Mahovlich finished second to Kindrachuk in the voting, and will serve the Penguins as alternate captain. “I…
Balanced Scoring Helps Whalers To Dominate WHA’s Early Action
SPRINGFIELD— It would be a tough act to follow, but the New England Whalers were hoping to repeat last year’s performance when they got off to a flying start with a 15-1I record. With six of their first seven games scheduled in the opponent’s arenas it would be difficult. But in a swing through Canada the Whalers met their chief adversaries for the Avco Trophy and came out with two wins (Quebec and Edmonton) and a tie (Winnipeg). Returning to Springfield, the Whalers delighted their fans by demolishing the Quebec Nordiques, 7-1, in the home opener. Then away on another three-game jaunt which they led off by soundly beating the Racers in Indianapolis. One of last season’s fortes was the team’s balanced scoring attack. This year it promised to be even better. The…
