Sheppard Arrives-But Three Depart
PITTSBURGH— The Pittsburgh Penguins entered training camp for the 1978-79 National Hockey League season with a vastly revamped roster from the one which finished fourth and out of the playoffs in the NHL’s Norris Division last year. When the Penguins obtained center Gregg Sheppard from the Atlanta Flames for right wing and team captain Jean Pronovost in early September, it was Pittsburgh general manager Baz Bastien’s third major trade of the offseason. Pronovost had been with Pittsburgh for 10 campaigns and was the club’s all-time leading scorer with 316 goals and 287 assists for 603 points. “It’s very tough to trade a player of Pronovost’s caliber after all of the years he has been with the organization,” said Bastien. “He has always been a dedicated and hard working player, but when he expressed his…
New Look Canucks Hoping To Turn Down Feeling Up With Fresh Faces
VANCOUVER— Jake Milford says the Vancouver Canucks are going to follow the lead of some other clubs and train overseas this season. He chuckles, because everyone knows the team is taking a 20-mile ferry trip to Courtenay on Vancouver Island. Laughs have been few and far between with the Canucks the past two seasons. Not because Milford and the rest have no sense of humor. Far from it, but the constant losing is beginning to warp everyone’s brain. With firm resolve to change that, Canucks begin their training camp with a logjam at center and left wing, a little thinness on the right side and question marks in goal and on defense. Center looks bright what with the acquisition of Roland Eriksson from Minnesota, Thomas Gradin from the Swedish national team, and Bill Derlago,…
Ziegler Says NHL To Appeal
Montreal— NHL president John Ziegler was emphatic—the league will abide by the U.S. court ruling sending Dale McCourt back to Detroit—but it has launched an immediate appeal of the decision. Ziegler said the NHL and its counsel have reviewed the court’s ruling and have decided on the appeal. “It is our counsel’s firm opinion that the court committed a reversible error in its conclusion of facts, and interpretation of the applicable law,” commented Ziegler. Ziegler said the NHL will prosecute and appeal to the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals as quickly as the rules of the court will permit. No date has been set for the hearing. He said the outcome is critical to the well being of every player, employee and club in the NHL. WHERE YOU’LL FIND IT ALL INSIDE Atlanta…… 29 Boston…… 7 Buffalo…… 19 Chicago………
Shero’s System Impresses Vets As Ranger Training Camp Bubbles
NEW YORK— The Rangers are only halfway through their first training camp under general manager and coach Fred Shero, and already the veterans who were around for last year’s camp are bubbling with enthusiasm over the methods used by Shero as opposed to those employed by his predecessors, John Ferguson and Jean-Guy Talbot. “Don’t get me wrong,” said captain Phil Esposito, preparing himself for his 16th National Hockey League season, “because Fergie and Guy definitely had a system in mind for this team during training camp last year. The only problem was, they didn’t really tell us about it until camp was over, the final cuts had been made, and the team had been picked. By then it was too late, and they couldn’t get their message across to us. “But this year…
