Nanne Giving Stars Macho Ice Look

BLOOMINGTON— A media advertising blitz by the Minnesota North Stars carried a simple but hard-hitting theme: “Major league hockey is back in town.” Trampled by National Hockey League brethern the past several years, the North Stars have taken designs on bounding back into consideration as a team to worry about, not one to take it easy against, as has been the case on many occasions in recent seasons. The North Stars definitiely do not want to be pushed around this season, not with the investment that George and Gordon Gund of the deceased Barons have made in buying off the Stars. General manager Lou Nanne isn’t stopping there. Now that he has whittled down his roster to almost 45 men with many more cuts to…

Physical Players, Not Goon Squads To Make Up Leafs

TORONTO— When talk among sports fans in this town during the summer moved away from the problems of the woeful football Argonauts and baseball Blue Jays and went to the Maple Leafs, the fans’ view seemed to be that the Leafs were trying to build a team with fighting as its main ingredient. Late last season, the Leafs acquired left winger Dan Maloney from the Detroit Red Wings. During the summer, they added defenseman Dave Hutchison from the Los Angeles Kings. Hutchison and Maloney are two chaps who never have backed up an inch from a scrap. The team already had David (Tiger) Williams, who’s had more than 30 major penalties for scraps in each of the past two seasons, and Pat Boutette, who’s short at five-foot-eight but refuses to permit larger foes…
