‘Heroic’ Graves Proving Valuable To Canucks
VANCOUVER— Hilliard Graves is probably the kind of fellow to whom they gave medals during the World Wars And while the National Hockey League cannot really be compared to Dunkirk for most, to the Vancouver Canucks this season, the similarities are oppressive. Still, Graves is pressing on regardless. Heroic may be stretching Graves’ work just a little. After all, he only has 16 goals with five games remaining in the regular schedule and that total is not going to strike fear into any goalie. But at this point he stands an excellent chance of winning the club’s most valuable player award if for no other reason than for simply suiting up for most of the games. WHA Closes TV Deal With CBC For Finals
TORONTO— The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation has announced plans for regional television coverage of the World Hockey Association playoffs, including national coverage in French and English for the final Avco Trophy round. Televised games will be those scheduled for Saturday and Sunday afternoons and Friday evenings. Included in the coverage on the national network are final-round contests on Friday, May 19, Saturday, May 20 and Sunday, May 21, if necessary. If games six and seven of the series are necessary, they will be televised on either May 26,27 or 28.…
Losses Against Weak Teams Foiled Sabres’ Title Hopes
BUFFALO— The Buffalo Sabres’ failure to win the National Hockey League’s Adams Division and to finish higher in the league’s overall standing than they did was caused by one fault: poor performance against the lower clubs. The Sabres won their season series against the champions, the Montreal Canadiens, and two of the other top teams, the New York Islanders and the Philadelphia Flyers. They led in the series with their division champions, the Boston Bruins, as this was written with one game remaining. Yet, they lost twice to the Cleveland Barons, twice to the Detroit Red Wings and lost games to the Minnesota North Stars, the New York Rangers and the Colorado Rockies. And the ties.
