Overtime Win Lets Whalers Regroup; Nordiques Locked In Playoff Fight

HARTFORD— After losing six consecutive overtime contests, the New England Whalers finally pulled one out. It was a crucial win, coming on the heels of a five-game losing streak and a stretch where they had managed just one win in nine games thereby plummeting the Whalers out of contention for first place. Coach Harry Neale had been at a loss to explain his team’s downfall. The players were working hard night after night but coming up on the wrong side of the ledger at the final buzzer. Nobody had an answer! When Winnipeg ended its lengthy winning streak the door was opened for the Whalers to close in again on the top spot. But while the Jets were losing four or five in a row, the Whalers matched them loss for loss—to…

Bouncing Smith Back With North Stars

BLOOMINGTON— National Hockey League trivia riddle: Tony Esposito, with a 1.76 goals-against average, had his name embossed as a 1971-72 winner of the Vezina Trophy. Who was the other Chicago goalie to share the honor that season? They call him the “Axe” in Minnesota, Gary Edward Smith. Since working as Esposito’s backup for two seasons in 1971-72 and 1972-73, Smith has bounced from Chicago to Vancouver to Minnesota to Washington and now, back to Minnesota. General manager-coach Lou Nanne acquired Smith on waivers from the Capitals Feb. 20 and sent him to the Central League to get some conditioning work in. “You can’t get by with just two goaltenders anymore and Smitty certainly has the credentials to play with our team,” explained Nanne, who has been making numerous deals to build for Minnesota’s future. Smith was…

Punchless Barons Picked Wrong Time For Scoring Slump

CLEVELAND— The title to this little piece is easy. It is called, “Anatomy of a Slump.” Its subtitle is, “How the Cleveland Barons Blew the 1978 Stanley Cup Playoffs.” The worst time of the season to experience a slump, of course, is the month of February when stretch runs are usually begun. The Barons, chose February to begin their third—and, to date, most ill-timed—prolonged slump of the 1977-78 National Hockey League season. The first two, believe it or not, did not prevent them from having a crack at their first playoff appearance in nearly a decade. Mid-season trades by Harry Howell helped a great deal. The Cleveland general manager brought in some new muscle and a wealth of experience and things began turning around almost immediately. Then came February and everything fell apart. Most everybody stopped scoring.…
