Wings’ Rutherford Coming Up Sharp In Playoff Drive
DETROIT— “Jimmy Rutherford & Co.” That’s what roach Bobby Kromm was labeling his Red Wings during a recent string of victories as Rutherford posted four straight victories, five of six and lost only one of seven appearances. One of the victories was a big 5-1 decision over the Kings, in which Rutherford outduelled Rogie Vachon for the second straight meeting. Rutherford backstopped the Wings to a 2-1 triumph in L.A. earlier in the streak. “We’ve been getting great goaltending, as good as any team in the league,” veteran Dennis Hextall said. Kromm agreed. “It was Jimmv Rutherford and company out there. No question about it. This was the first time all season we’ve gotten three straight consistently well-played games from our goalies. “I’ve never seen Rutherford any sharper. And he was just as sharp the next…
Chynoweth Resignation Stuns WCHL; Bruins Turn Road Fortunes Around
CALGARY— President Ed Chynoweth stunned the Western Canada Hockey League in late February with the announcement that he has tendered his resignation, effective June 15. The next day, referee-in-chief Joe Cassidy followed Chynoweth down the retirement alley, saying simply, “I’ve had enough.” The resignations leave a gaping hole in the WCHL operation, looked upon by Canada’s other two major junior A leagues as a model of efficiency. Chynoweth actually wrote his letter of resignation—his third one in three years, one governor said-on Feb. 15, two weeks before it became public. It was regretfully accepted because, as was not the case with his previous attempts to quit the post, the WCHL governors could not dissuade the popular 36-year-old president from following through with his decision. “I leave with no hard feelings,” Chynoweth told The Brandon Sun…
Flyers Bank On Veteran Goalers In Stretch
PHILADELPHIA— Success or failure? The Flyers’ Great Experiment—tapping rookie Rick St. Croix as their goaltender for the season’s most demanding road trip—certainly wasn’t a failure. St. Croix compiled a respectable 3.04 average that included 3-1 and 6-1 victories in Pittsburgh and Washington respectively. Everyone from Keith Allen to Fred Shero to Philadelphia players were convinced that St. Croix can play in the NHL. However, following a humiliating 7-1 crushing in Montreal that concluded the 10-day trip, it was clear that St. Croix wouldn’t lift the Flyers on his slender shoulders and single-handedly carry them to the Patrick Division pennant. Their 2-3-1 record on the trip shoved the Flyers almost hopelessly behind the division-leading Islanders. The Flyers were an embarassing 1-10-5 vs. the NHL’s other top five teams. Montreal’s 13-2-3 was best among the league’s…
