Murdoch Sparking Rangers In Bid For Wild Card Spot

NEW YORK— This season has been pure murder, in more ways than one for Donnie Murdoch, the New York Rangers sophomore right wing. But there were signs that things might be getting better for the 21-year-old British Columbia native. Against the Cleveland Barons on March 8, Murdoch’s magic produced a pure hat trick—three straight goals—in the third period—as the Rangers whipped the Barons 6-1. “In the final minute, Phil Esposito came over to me and told me to be ready for a faceoff pass. When I got the five goals against Minnesota, Espo got me the fifth goal in the final minute with a pass from a faceoff,” revealed Murdoch. Sure enough, Esposito won the draw and got the puck to Murdoch in the slot. Donnie pulled the trigger—and the puck whipped past goalie…

Chynoweth Resignation Stuns WCHL; Bruins Turn Road Fortunes Around

CALGARY— President Ed Chynoweth stunned the Western Canada Hockey League in late February with the announcement that he has tendered his resignation, effective June 15. The next day, referee-in-chief Joe Cassidy followed Chynoweth down the retirement alley, saying simply, “I’ve had enough.” The resignations leave a gaping hole in the WCHL operation, looked upon by Canada’s other two major junior A leagues as a model of efficiency. Chynoweth actually wrote his letter of resignation—his third one in three years, one governor said-on Feb. 15, two weeks before it became public. It was regretfully accepted because, as was not the case with his previous attempts to quit the post, the WCHL governors could not dissuade the popular 36-year-old president from following through with his decision. “I leave with no hard feelings,” Chynoweth told The Brandon Sun…

Stretch Run Grants RPI Home Ice; Tigers Show Promise For Future

BOSTO— A tremendous stretch run by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute elevated the Engineers to fourth place in Eastern Collegiate Athletic Association Division One’s final standings and gave them - home ice for their first playoff quarterfinal round ever. Jim Salfi’s sextet won their last seven league games to finish with a 13-8 league record, their most wins ever in Division One play. Significantly, all but one of the games, an 8-6 win at Vermont, were on the friendly ice of the RPI Field House. The Engineers were slated to host Boston College, at 14-9 just percentage points behind them in the final standings. Other playoff pairings were: Eighth place New Hampshire (14-11) at first place Boston University (21-1); seventh place Providence (12-9-2) at second place Cornell (16-5-1); and sixth place Brown (13-9-1) at third…
