Ottawa’s Smith Sets OH A Mark For Points
OTTAWA— Bob Smith of the Ottawa 67s is enjoying a fantastic season in the Ontario Major Hockey League and has launched himself on a record setting scoring course. Smith etched his name in the OHA record books this past weekend when he scored once and assisted on three other goals to raise his 1977-78 season total to 173 points—a new league scoring record. The Ottawa center, who is touted by many as the best junior hockey player in Canada, erased the name of Mike Kaszycki from the records when he racked up his 64th goal and 109th assist giving him a league-leading 173 points to better Kaszycki’s total of 172 set in 1975-76 when he was a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. Kaszycki is presently with the New York Islanders of…

Wings Draw Record 14,084
KANSAS CITY— Larry Wilson’s Red Wings won only once in a busy four-game week, but they set an attendance record for professional minor league hockey. A crowd of 14,084 turned out for Merchants Night in Kemper Arena. Unfortunately, that was one of two home games the Wings lost during the week, a 5-1 setback against Dallas as Bob Ritchie had the lone KC goal. Earlier they were victimized at home, 7-5, by a five-goal Salt Lake outburst in the last period, and lost a 6-5 thriller in Dallas. But a Saturday night home game broke the losing streak, as they handled Fort Worth, 53. Danny Gruen, Roland Cloutier, Mike Bloom, Al Cameron and Fred Berry scored in the close loss at Dallas. While against Salt Lake, Gruen, John Taft, J.P. Leblanc and Al…

Bruins’ Grahame To Carry Goaling Load
BOSTON— Forgive me for saying it but there are times when the best trade in hockey turns out to be the one that wasn’t made. It’s been said a lot around Boston lately. It may even become a cliche. The trade that wasn’t made in this case was the deal that general manager Harry Sinden has been working on since last summer, the one that didn’t send one of the three Bruins’ goaltenders away in exchange for a defenseman. Sinden closed down the trading mart abruptly at 6:07 of the first period Feb. 21 in Denver when Colorado rookie Joe Contini crashed into goalie Gerry Cheevers, putting him on the shelf for the rest of the season. Cheevers suffered what was described as tom ligaments on the inside of his right knee and strained…
