Marks Sites Pulford’s Preparations As Reason Why Hawks Flying Again

CHICAGO— It’s there, an intangible so tangible that John Marks can almost touch it. And he’s not one to let whim get in his way. “We feel now like we can beat anybody, and we can if we keep working,” said the sinewy Black Hawks’ left winger, who scored a goal in six consecutive games a couple weeks ago. “You don’t want to go overboard on the way you feel, but there’s no doubt that win or lose, we’re going in the right direction. “We have our pride back. Our confidence. We made some changes in personnel that were important. Pit Martin and Dennis Hull were good hockey players, but maybe they were a little too settled here. There were nights that Pit just didn’t want to play. “Dennis, of course, had problems with…

NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE

Looking At NHL Goalers NHL’s … Player of the Week While the Montreal-Canadiens were lengthening their record unbeaten streak last week, versatile Rejean Houle had his best week ever in a Montreal uniform. Houle, who returned last year to the Canadiens after three years in the World Hockey Association, scored five goals, including three in an 8-2 romp over the Washington Capitals, his second career NHL hat trick. The production raised Houle’s total to 22 on the season, the same total he had last year in 65 games. Against the Colorado Rockies, Houle, who has played every forward position for Montreal this year, had two goals and two assists and now has 45 points in 54 games. Flickering Flames Fritter Away Leads In Road Trip Ties

Special To The Hockey News While the Atlanta Flames have been somewhat displeased by their inability to surpass the .500 mark over the course of a season, they may be particularly disgruntled by their recent road play which last week saw them take only two of a possible six points when they should have had considerably more. The week began on a rather sour note as the Flames “held on” for a 5-5 tie in their match in Cleveland against the Barons, a game which the Flames had in the bag when they assumed a 5-1 lead early in the second period. Two goals by Ken Houston, and singles by Eric Vail, John Gould and recent recall Greg Fox boosted the Flames into their four-goal advantage over the Barons, but the club looked…

Nationals Hold Own Against Best; Shutout Of Royals Miffs Tessier

LAVAL— Five consecutive games against tough teams like Sherbrooke, Verdun, Trois Rivieres, Montreal, and Cornwall, might make it easy for a club to lose its respectability. But in the city of Laval, they see things differently. The Nationals won four and tied one of those five matches against the Quebec Major Junior League’s best, establishing themselves as a contender to be reckoned with as the league approaches playoff time. After tying Sherbrooke and defeating Verdun and Trois Rivieres, Laval played the Juniors at the Montreal Forum and won an exciting, hard-fought battle 6-5. The winning goal came late in the second period when Andre Carlos beat Montreal goalie Marco Baron on a breakaway. Laval then returned home the next night to face Cornwall. The far-from-tired Nationals stunned Cornwall, trouncing the Lebel Division leaders 7-0. Goaltender…
