Lack Of NHL Sponsor, Financing Doomed Hampton From The Start

HAMPTON— The Hampton Gulls have flown off into the wild blue yonder. After achieving success in the now defunct Southern Hockey League, the Gulls could not make a go of it in the American Hockey League and the club ceased operations as of Friday, Feb. 10. According to a published report, the Gulls were more than $300,000 in debt. New Haven Nighthawk president Jack McColl said, “The loss of Hampton won’t have any serious impact, it won’t weaken the league. Four Americans Among Top Point Scorers In PHL Race

Special To The Hockey News LONG BEACH— On the 14 leading point producers in the Pacific Hockey League, four of them are American-born. That, at least in part, clearly indicates that there’s a place in professional hockey for U.S. talent. While each team in the four-team PHL is required to carry no fewer than five, there are a total of 25, nine of whom are with the Long Beach Sharks. And the jewel of the Yankee contingent, at least at this juncture, has been 23-year-old Tom Songin of the Sharks, who, through 18 games, has produced at least one point in 17 of them. His totals read 15 goals and 12 assists for 27 points. Only one other American has more, Jeff Carlson of Phoenix with 28, while Dale Smedsmo of the Sharks is deadlocked…

More Trades Forecast For Whalers; Quebec Takes Slide In WHA Race

HARTFORD— The Whalers week-long break from a realigned schedule coincided with “the blizzard of the century” in New England, so the four day vacation’ from practices was more than likely spent keeping in shape by shovelling snow. Since a travel ban was imposed covering all roads in the state the team wouldn’t have been able to practice anyway. Nothing lost, nothing gained? On the other hand the. Winnipeg Jets took advantage of their games in hand and the Whalers lull in the schedule to take over the WHA’s top spot. Whalers’ defenseman Brad Selwood rationalized — “Maybe it’s better this way. Now we know we’re in a dog fight. From here on, it’s a 30-game season.” Before the Whalers managed to resume practice sessions, however, director of hockey operations Jack Kelley offered a…
