Missing Leaf Stars For Czech Contest Neilson’s Decision

TORONTO— The game was only an exhibition match, part of the international series between National Hockey League teams and two Czechoslovakian and one Soviet Union team but it created more controversy in Toronto hockey circles than anything in recent years. The Toronto Maple Leafs lost the match, 8-5, to Kladno of Czechoslovakia before a full house at Maple Leaf Gardens. The fans’ anger came from the fact that four Leaf stars—goalie Mike Palmateer, defensemen Borje Salming and Ian Turnbull, winger Lanny McDonald—weren’t dressed for the game and defenseman Brian Glennie departed after one shift. The Leaf hierarchy listed injuries as the reason for their absence. But two nights later, all five were much in evidence when the Leafs defeated Colorado Rockies, 5-0, in a league match. Canucks’ Snepsts Develops Into Consistent Rearguard

VANCOUVER— When Harold Snepsts was named to fill out the Clarence Campbell team on defense for last year’s All Star game, many hockey observers were skeptical. The first question was who is he? The second was what is he doing on an All Star team? Neither of those questions are difficult to answer now that the burly left-side defender is in his fourth season in the NHL. He has become a seasoned veteran of the league, mainly on sheer hard work, determination and all those other corny attributes. The name is as difficult to pronounce <as it is to spell. NHL’S…Player of the Week Captain Jean Pronovost set a good example for his Pittsburgh Penguins’ teammates as he scored six goals last week as the Penguins held their third-place standing in the Norris Division by gaining five of eight points on the week. Pronovost scored at least one goal in all four Penguin games this week, including two-goal efforts in the 8-6 loss to Montreal and the Penguins’ 4-2 victory over the Cleveland Barons. Pittsburgh also defeated the New York Rangers 5-3 as Pronovost had a goal and tied Philadelphia 4-4. The six goals by Pronovost raised his season’s total to 23.…
