Canadiens ‘Streaking’ Into NHL’s Second Half

MONTREAL— Odds are not likely that the Montreal Canadiens will match their 132-point total of the 1976-77 season, but at the midpoint of the current schedule Canadiens led the National Hockey League with 61 points after 40 games, a five-point advantage over Boston, Buffalo and Philadelphia, who all had 56 and nine ahead of Toronto which compiled 52 points. Coach Scotty Bowman feels that “around 120 points” should be good enough to win the overall crown, but that they’ve got to keep an eye open in case one team gets really hot. When the early returns from the All Star balloting were announced, most of the big names were there. More were expected when the…

Modest Sjoberg Jets’ Quiet Leader; Aeros Find Oilers To Their Liking

WINNIPEG— While high-scoring Bobby Hull, Anders Hedberg and Ulf Nilsson receive more recognition, anyone close to the Winnipeg hockey scene will admit there is not a more valuable player on the team than defenseman Lars-Erik Sjoberg. When watching the explosive Jets skate circles around opponents, most of the attention is focused on Hull, Hedberg, Nilsson and other goal-scorers. But leading the attack with the precision of a skilled surgeon is Sjoberg, the soft-spoken Swede who serves as the team captain. “Not getting a lot of publicity doesn’t bother me because the others are the goal scorers,” says the 33-year-old Sjoberg. “It’s natural they should get more attention. As a defenseman, I get satisfaction when I get the puck up to them and watch them score.” It figures the modest Sjoberg would not be jealous…
