Leafs’ McDonald Fit To Be Tied As Club Falters

TORONTO— Lanny McDonald of the Leafs may be tired of being the ‘tier’ but it’s certain that he’s wearing out goaltenders arbund the National Hockey League. MacDonald became one of six players to have reached the 20-goal plateau among NHL sharpshooters with a five-goal performance in the space of eight days over four games last week, but the Leafs managed only three points of the possible eight and remained three points behind the Boston Bruins and the Buffalo Sabres in the battle for the Adams Division supremacy. The Leafs also used up a couple of their games in hand and have now played just one game less than the frontrunners. What was the most frustrating thing for McDonald was that in spite of his great week, and in spite of the fact that…

Slight Slumps Bother Kings’ Sargent, Vachon

LOS ANGELES— Ron Stewart rates high marks so far in his first season as coach of the Los Angeles Kings. He has worked new players into the lineup effectively and has his team skating well. The team hasn’t been completing plays as well as it might, but this probably is because there are so many new players, so many injured players, so manv different and shifting combinations. The attack is sound and looks like it will click in time. While Stewart has opened up the offense, he has done so without sacrificing defense. The defense as a whole generally has been effective. However, the coach has a couple of problems to solve and it will be interesting to see how…

NEW YORK— Dallas Smith is 36-years-old, exactly Rod Gilbert’s age. Despite the New York Rangers avowed youth program, general manager John Ferguson reached out and signed the veteran defenseman to a contract for the rest of the 1977-78 season. “Dallas is a steady experienced defenseman whose record speaks for itself,” said Ranger coach Jean-Guy Talbot. “He will be defensive insurance for us.” Smith, at odds with the Boston management, “retired” from the Bruins last March and almost was signed by the Rangers just prior to the roster deadline in March. He played with Team Canada in the 1977 World Championship in Vienna and was scouted there by Ferguson. When training camp opened, the Rangers were determined to go with youth—and still are for the long haul—but they reached out for 34-year-old Don Awrey and…
