HARTFORD— “And it came to pass on the seventh day of December, nineteen hundred and seventy-seven in the town of Birmingham, Alabama.” That’s the way it was written when the New England Whalers sent out their release to announce that Gordie Howe had scored goal number 1,000. Indeed it was somewhat ironic that the historic goal was scored in a city where the game of hockey was virtually unknown until a year ago. Gordie Howe had been playing major league hockey for 28 years before most of the people who witnessed “the big one” had even seen a game of hockey.
