Penguins Slump As Goalers Let Down

PITTSBURGH— The least of the Penguins’ problems quickly developed into their worst problem. The Penguins’ lone strongpoint last season (outside a penchant for internal disorder) became a weakpoint early this year when the goaltending went sour. The Penguin forwards were playing well defensively, and the defense was improved, but the team sunk to the bottom of the league in goals against average with over four a game. “You can’t totally blame the goaltenders.” said Penguin general manager Baz Bastien; a former goaltender who knows what it’s like to shoulder the blame, “but it’s true we haven’t been getting the big save.” Last year goaltenders Dune Wilson and Denis Herron virtually carried the Penguins on their shoulders, both finishing the season with goals against averages under 3.00 even though the rest of the team played…

Ellis Readjusting To Hockey Life

TORONTO— It was rather nice, Ron Ellis said, smiling slightly, to score in the first game of the season. The goal to which the Toronto Maple Leafs right winger referred came against the Atlanta Flames in the 11th game of the season for the Leafs—and Ellis. So what’s this stuff about scoring in the first game of the season? You see, when Ellis rejoined the Leafs this season following a two-year retirement from the National Hockey League, he missed the Leafs training camp and exhibition game series. His preparation for the 1977-78 season consisted of considerable solitary skating and running, participation in five workouts and two shifts in a pre-season match at Moncton against the Nova Scotia Voyageurs.
