Wings’ Brass Tempers Early NHL Success

DETROIT— The Red Wings certainly have been one of the major surprises of the hockey season but despite the impressive start general manager Ted Lindsay and coach Bobby Kromm aren’t sitting around congratulating each other. They are hard at work trying to improve the club even further. Club officials were thrilled with the club’s early-season performance. In their opinion, the Wings have attained their initial goal—to be respectable. Now they are looking beyond that to a playoff spot. With that as the new objective, they realized they must add some firepower and trade with the rival World Hockey Association was designed to bolster the offense. SPOKANE— Almost as much time was spent checking over the rulebook as playing hockey in recent Western International League activity. Unfortunately, more time wasn’t spent checking out the rule book adopted by the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association before the season. That way the flurry of reading could have been avoided in mid-November. To be specific, Spokane played four games in four days and lost two of them. 3-2 in Cranbrook and 7-6 in Trail, amid arguments about improperly curved sticks. And in each case the situation was awkwardly, if not incorrectly handled, by referees. Spokane scored in the final seconds in the Cranbrook game for a 3-2 lead and a protest of the goal-scorers stick followed.
