Ontario Sold in U.S. and Canada KINGSTON— Walter (Punch) Scherer, the distinguished and able general manager of Kingston Canadians, is still boiling over the loss of under age star centerman Ken Linseman to the World Hockey Association Birmingham Bulls. Scherer reacted bitterly last week to statements attributed to Arthur C. Kaminsky, Linseman’s New York based attorney. Kaminsky was quoted as saying Sherer and Canadians gave Linseman permission to turn professional. (The WHA and the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association have an unwritten understanding that players will not be signed to pro contracts until they turn 20. Linseman was 18 when he signed…

Ontario Sold in U.S. and Canada VANCOUVER— Is Vancouver the last stop on a hockey player’s merry-go-round? Maybe so for someone like Derek Sanderson, but for several other veterans such as Mike Walton. Cesare Maniago and now Pit Martin, the place has been more of a haven to show that there’s plenty of bounce in the old legs yet. Walton scored three goals in a recent 54 triumph over the Cleveland Barons, raising his total to 11 for the season, tops on the club. Maniago, the 38-year-old backstop who nearly got the Canucks into the playoffs last year with his…

Ontario Sold in U.S. and Canada MEDICINE HAT— Autumn to most hockey coaches is like spring to a young lover—a time of optimism. So, it is refreshingly honest of Medicine Hat Tigers’ coach Vic Stasiuk to accept the realities of his situation and candidly admit his team isn’t a worldbeater. “We’re like an uncut diamond,” Stasiuk said of his Central Division tailenders. “An uncut diamond that needs a master’s touch.” Medicine Hat fans think Stasiuk could be that master. The veteran pro, who at one time terrorized National Hockey League goaltenders while a member of Boston Bruins’ famed Uke Line (along with…
Skidding Jets Disappoint Big Home Crowds
WINNIPEG— The high-flying Jets are in somewhat of a holding pattern lately as the New England Whalers keep sailing away and the Quebec Nordiques are warming up as the weather gets colder. There’s no big panic in Winnipeg, but the Jets have been struggling, not even playing .500 hockey and the majority of the problems are coming on defense, by blueliners and goaltenders alike. Jets’ winless streak stretched to four games with a 2-2 tie against supposedly weak Birmingham Bulls putting an end to a three-game losing streak, all by one goal. After dropping a pair of 3-2 decisions at home, first before a sellout crowd of 10-357 to Quebec and then in front of 9,108 with the Cincinnati Stingers in town, the Jets hoped to regroup on the road against the always offensive-minded…
