10-Cent Beer, Canadiens Draw Record 15,206 Crowd
DENVER— The Colorado Rockies, a franchise recently labeled as ‘a disaster area’ by Players’ Association president Alan Eagleson, set an attendance record on Nov. 16 when they played before 15,206 fans—a hockey record for the state of Colorado. All it took was a 10-cent beer night and the Stanley Cup defending Montreal Canadiens. With the team averaging less than 6,000 fans a game, and with one attendance of 3,653 and two others not announced, the team was struggling at the box office, while getting off to its best start ever on the ice. The Rockies went into the game with the Canadiens at 5-5-3 which put them in second place in the always tight Smythe Division chasing the Chicago Black Hawks. Even though they eventually lost the contest 4-1, it was a scoreless tie…

Complacency Reaches Whalers But Club Continues To Win
HARTFORD— The New England Whalers continued to sail along setting new team records in each outing, but complacency and lapses in concentration were beginning to cause a problem or two. The Whalers broke a club record set in March of 1973, by beating Edmonton for their ninth consecutive win. Two nights later they took another step toward surpassing the WHA record for consecutive victories (11 by Edmonton in 1973) by beating Indianapolis. The first five victories in the string were by margins of at least three goals. But the next several games were in doubt almost to the final buzzer. Of the first 14 games, the opposition opened the scoring nine times At the outset, the Whalers were accepting each challenge and were blasting back for big victories. Later, although the Whalers continued…

NHL WEEK …In Review
MONTREAL— The most potent power-play in the National Hockey League combined with a much tighter defense than in recent seasons has given Detroit Red Wings their best start in eight years. The Wings, who have won eight games and tied another three among their 17 starts, are second in the Norris Division with 19 points, one more than third-place Los Angeles Kings and eight fewer than Montreal Canadiens. Already, with only nine road games played, the Wings have won four—the same total they had for 40 games in 1976-77. Their 19 points are the most they have had after 17 games since 1969-70 when they had an identical record to this season. Wings have scored 18 power-play goals on 64 opportunities for 28.1 percent. Last season they didn’t score their 18th power-play goal until…
