Lack Of Scoring Punch Forced Islanders’ Trade
LONG ISLAND— Quick now. Prior to this season, what was the last time the New York Islanders made a trade? Couldn’t have been too long ago, right? All teams make trades, especially during the summer months. Well, prior to this season, the last trade made by the Islanders was during the 1974-75 campaign. It was January 7, to be exact, and the Isles picked up center Jude Drouin from the Minnesota North Stars in exchange for journeyman Craig Cameron. That deal came two days after J.P. Parise arrived from Minny and became an instant hit. Since then, the Islanders have quietly built their team around draft picks and players gaining experience in their own system. Schoenfeld Leads Sabres Despite Losing Captaincy
BUFFALO— One of the most heartening things about the Buffalo Sabres’ early-season showing—three wins, a loss and a tie in the first five games—has been the strong performance of Jim Schoenfeld at defense. The fans—and probably the rest of the club and the front office—were wondering just how the big redhead would perform after being stripped of his team captaincy. Schony had some bitter words to say after general manager Punch Imlach asked him to resign during the summer so that, Punch said, the new coach, Marcel Pronovost, could pick his own man as team leader on the ice. Schony said he expected he would be traded and even when he reported for training camp, he said he figured he wouldn’t be with the club for long. He still is, though, and the 25-year-old backliner…
