Rockies, Gardner Surprise Of NHL
MONTREAL— A couple of National Hockey League veterans used to the pressure of trying to stay atop the individual scoring race are getting a battle from a young sophomore who is leading his team to a surprising start in this young season. Paul Gardner of Colorado Rockies picked up nine points in three games last week to move into a first-place tie with Guy Lafleur of Montreal and Phil Esposito of New York Rangers. While Gardner was pushing his points total to 15, the Rockies were making things uncomfortable for Chicago in the tight race for top spot in the Smythe Division. Wallaceburg, Ontario Sold in U.S. and Canada CINCINNATI— Coach Jacques Demers had said it would take the Stingers a while to adapt to his style of hockey. And so, he was not alarmed by the team’s poor start. “There is no reason for anybody to get panicky,” Demers said after the Stingers lost four of their first five games. “The way we’ve played, we should be no worse than 3-2.
