‘Unbreakable’ Smith Sensational For Caps
WASHINGTON— Tough Tom McVie has given up trying to “break” goaltender Gary Smith. “I’ve been told that Gary Smith wouldn’t work for anyone, that he hated practice, that he wouldn’t get in shape,” McVie said. “He certainly didn’t sound like the kind of player we wanted for the’ Capitals. But we knew he could play goal and there was a day when we said we’d take a chance on Smith “I was determined to break the guy, to find out if he could take it. and if he couldn’t, we’d say, goodbye.” If you check the NHL rosters, Gary Smith is alive and well in Washington. “I couldn’t break the big galoot,” McVie admitted last week, “and believe me. I tried. “I purposely made him do things that I didn’t think he could do but…
Phillipoff Brings Muscle To Flames
No one has ever accused Harold Phillipoff of being a shrinking violet. On the contrary, the rugged left winger of the Atlanta Flames, who was the team’s No. 1 draft choice in 1976, has brought needed muscle to the NHL club. He loves a fight but he wants to make it as a player and coach Fred Creighton has thrust him into a regular left wing spot. Not too many players are going…
Barons’ Early Camp Lifted Vet Neilson Into 16th Campaign
CLEVELAND— Meet Jim Neilson. Occupation: Defenseman for the Cleveland Barons of the National Hockey League. Rating: Better than average. Age: 35 going on 25. A year ago at this time, Jim Neilson was on the sidelines with a knee injury that took time healing. Some believed the veteran’s NHL career was nearing an end. Everybody knew Neilson had been one of the steadiest—if not spectacular—rearguards over the last 15 years in the NHL, 12 of which were spent with the New York Rangers. Some believed the only reason Neilson was hanging on with the Barons was because Harry Howell, an old teammate, was the Cleveland GM. No way. Howell’s confidence in Neilson’s ability has been rewarded mightily in the early going of the 1977-78 campaign. The backliner has been bouncing around like a rookie. “My legs…
