Some Sage Observations On The Pro Hockey Scene

This Could Be Wrong But… THESE ARE SIMPLY SOME observations on the eve of the opening of the 1977-78 hockey season. They could be all wrong but it seems… • That the NHL’s waiver-draft was a big waste of time, merely window-dressing to make it appear that the league is interested in parity. Some NHL people talked about it as if the have-nots were being offered considerable aid by the haves. In reality, it seems the draft was the chance for some teams to place their worn out laundry on the line in the hope that somebody would steal it. • That the nuts are back in full bloom in the NHL. Ex-NHL Stars To Be Inducted In North Bay’s Hall Of Fame

NORTH BAY— A roast for three veteran North Bay-born hockey stars of the past on Nov. 19 will also see their induction as the first members of a North Bay Sports Hall of Fame. Pete Palangio, Regis (Pep) Kelly and Ab DeMarco Sr. will be the honorees. Kelly was an outstanding penalty-killer with Toronto Maple Leafs for several seasons while DeMarco was a leading scorer for New York Rangers and one of the NHL’s all-time top stickhandlers. All three men also had excellent minor pro careers, with DeMarco starring for Calder Cup champs (Cleveland Barons and Buffalo Bisons) and Palangio leading the old St. Louis Flyers in…

Chapman Brightens Gloomy Player Picture

PITTSBURGH— Although the last Penguin season was crammed full of disappointments, Blair Chapman’s still sticks out. The first forward taken in the 1976 Amateur draft, Chapman scored only 14 goals and 23 assists last season. And not because he didn’t have enough ice time, as the right wing was rarely benched. And not because he didn’t have talent, as any observer could see Chapman was strong, a fast skater with a quick wrist shot. The one thing he lacked was confidence, as his whole bag of it was shattered by the Montreal Canadiens. Chapman was on the ice for a pile of goals against when the Penguins dropped 10-1 and 9-1 decisions to Montreal early in the season. Between those two games and a bad night in Toronto, he was minus 10 in three…
