INDIANAPOLIS— While vendors at every arena and stadium insist that you can’t tell the players without a program, the hawkers at Market Square Arena are not to be disbelieved. The Indianapolis Racers have taken on a completely different look from the team that advanced to the Eastern Division finals last year. The club has a new coach in Ron Ingram and more than a dozen new players. And that being the case, nobody knows quite what to expect of the Racers this season. Ingram, who had to rebuild the club in a month’s time and then only got to look at the team in one exhibition game, was nevertheless optimistic. “We have good goaltending. We have fairly strong defense, and I feel we definitely have more scoring punch than last year.” said Ingram. Ingram has two…

Plager Stays On As ‘Special’ Scout

ST. LOUIS— Bob Plager is missing from the St. Louis Blues’ roster for the first time. Until this season Plager was the only player who had been with the Blues continuously since their first game Oct. 11, 1067. For 10 full seasons during high spots and low spots Plager was on defense for the Blues. Now Plager has retired as a player. At age 34 he had played 626 games in the National Hockey League. “Retiring is a tough thing to do,” Plager said. “I went to training camp this year to make the Blues, but if I had made the team, it wouldn’t have been for long.” Hockey players who have that consuming desire to compete also generally have a consuming desire to avoid retirement.
