Tough Cut Looms On Kings’Defense
LOS ANGELES— The 41 players rostered as the Kings started pre-season training at their suburban home Inglewood Forum and Culver City practice rink represent by far the best talent the team has had. Whether the result will be the best season the team has had is another matter. Balance has been lacking and on defense at least it appears only one newcomer will crack the lineup. Both old coach Bob Pulford and new coach Ron Stewart believe defense to be the base on which winners are built. The Kings were giving up more than 300 goals a season until Pully’s system took it down to 185 three years ago, but after Terry Harper and Dan Maloney were traded it went to 265 and 241 the last two seasons. The 241 was sixth best…
Caps’ Fortunes Improve Near Training Camp End
WASHINGTON— Yes, Virginia, the Washington Capitals are alive and much better, thank you, and they will be playing in the state named after you (in Hampton, Va.) with a pretty fair chance of winning the game. How fair? Well, let’s say a lot better than a couple of weeks ago when it appeared that they had lost number one pick Robert Picard to the Quebec Nordiques. and top center Guy Charron to the injured list for a good portion of the season with a damaged knee. But prodigal son Picard joined the club in Hershey after the World Hockey Association refused to ratify his contract and played a key role in the Caps’ first win of the exhibition season, while the report on Charron is that his knee is not nearly as damaged…
Smith In Sabres’ Front Office
BUFFALO— Floyd Smith, whose contract as Buffalo coach was not renewed by the Sabres when it ran out May 31, was rehired in a front office capacity. Smitty is handling some of the duties of assistant general manager Fred Hunt, who is recuperating from a heart attack. The Sabres will have a new ice surface this season and a much-enlarged press box in Memorial Auditorium.…

Are they really concerned for what is best for hockey or is it greed or fear? Take Ballard for example. When one of his member teams (Cleveland) was in danger of folding, he was one of the first vultures to hover over the body waiting to devour part of the corpse along with some of the other so-called elite among the NHL. You call this big league? The problem with hockey is not the number of teams, it is the…
