Flyers Sign Top Draft But Few Changes Likely Despite Talk Of Trades

PHILADELPHIA— The Philadelphia Flyers’ mid-summer news is no news. While the NHL and WHA were working at Guy Lafleur speed toward forming one major league, the Flyers were gliding along like Gilles Marotte. If the pace around the Spectrum offices were any slower, the Flyers would be arrested for loitering. Once Kevin McCarthy, the club’s top draft choice, was signed, vacations were in order for many front-office employees. Nothing wrong with this: everyone deserves time to relax after the long, and in the Flyers’ case, disappointing winter. However, considering the Flyers’ stunning four-straight flameout against Boston in the Stanley Cup semi-finals, many were expecting a major deal—quickly. The idea was: GM Keith Allen would shake up the club enough to give returning players something besides their backhands and backstrokes to ponder over the summer.…
