WHA Still Picks 90 Amateurs Despite Uncertainty
The World Hockey Association, shrouded in uncertainty as to its hockey future, still held the 1977 amateur draft and came away with 90 players selected from Canadian major leagues, American colleges and some Europeans. Teams normally draft in reverse order of the league finish but two of the WHA powers, Houston and Winnipeg, emerged with top draft picks through prior trade commitments. Houston wound up with the first and 10th picks in the draft. The Aeros drafted defenseman Scott Campbell, six-foot-three, 205, in the first round, then followed up with the selection of center Dwight Foster, five-foot-11, 176. Campbell, also the first round choice of the National Hockey League St. Louis Blues, played for London of the Ontario Hockey Association last season, while Foster played for Kitchener of the OHA. “We drafted with a…

Clark Hamilton, forward, signed to pro contract from Notre Dame University. PITTSBURGH — Morris Lukowich, forward, signed to NHL contract after jumping Houston of WHA.
