Parent Blames Layoff For Shaky Playoff Netminding Against Leafs
PHILADELPHIA— How soon they forget. When two-time Vezina Trophy winner Bernie Parent showed signs of faltering in the Philadelphia Flyers’ two home-ice playoff losses to Toronto Maple Leafs, coach Fred Shero wasted no time in replacing him with back-up netminder Wayne Stephenson. “I think it was the week off that did it,” said Parent in an attempt to explain his loss of form. “The last 10 games, I had eight wins and two ties. I really had my momentum going. Then we had seven days off, and I lost my timing. But I think I am getting it back in practice.” Parent reiterated he is not envious of Stephenson, who backstopped the Flyers to four playoff wins in a row.…

Flint’s Jim Koleff will agree. Koleff won with 114 points the International Hockey League’s scoring championship but it didn’t win him a berth on the league’s All Star team. Koleff was conspicuous by his absence from the team, selected by IHL players. Unfortunately for Koleff, the voting for the annual team took place before he zoomed into the point lead. Koleff was a late bloomer. He was an also-ran early in the season and didn’t become a contender for the scoring championship until…

DEADLINE STOPPERS
STINGERS FIRE SLATER CINCINNATI— The Cincinnati Stingers will have a new coach next season with the firing of Terry Slater, less than a week after his favored Stingers were unceremoniously dumped out of the playoffs in four straight games by the Indianapolis Racers. The club’s executive vice-president Bill DeWitt Jr., said the move was made because the team needs a fresh start next year. Slater was winding down his three-year contract. The club said he will not remain in the Cincinnati organization. The coaching change had been rumored for some time and when the Stingers came up flat in their Eastern Division semi-final series with the Racers, the writing was on the wall.for Slater. LEAFS TO KEEP KELLY TORONTO— Leafs’ owner Harold Ballard said that coach Red Kelly’s job is as secure as his and he…
